moggylover wrote: »Hi - how about bread and butter pudding with a difference? Instead of putting fruit in - either sprinkle in those little chocolate chips that you can buy quite cheaply in the supermarket, or rough grate some of Mr T's milk and/or white and cook! Doesn't taste anything like bread and butter pudding - and looks fab if done with both colours of chocolate. If I am feeling really extravagant I add a little cream to the milk and egg mix as well (and possibly serve with a little drop as well. Can also sprinkle a little cinnamon on top if you like.
If you make in individual ramekins you can make this into almost a "dinner party" type pud by popping on some fresh fruit (especially things like blackberries or strawberries).
nomnomnom sounds lovely x0 -
Hello poor neglected (by me!) thread! Hello to all it's lovely visitors.:hello:
I'm still alive, and taking advantage of waking early to jot you a note before Acetate Monkey awakes and we begin another day's decorating.
I have been reading, and it sounds like you are all doing so well :T:T:T.
I'll try to respond to a couple of things that people have asked about. Breakfasts came up, how can they be done cheaply?
Mr Weezl's cheapest breakfast is 3/4 rounds of HM toast with butter/sunflower spread and HM marmalade.
This works out as 3.5p, or 4.5p with his 2 cuppas.
Beans on toast with or without an asda sausage is another good frugal brekkie, at 15p with the sausage, if we want summat more filling...
He also has muesli which works out as 5p per 100g bowl serving. He would probably also have a slice of toast too, total 6p or 7p with tea!
I've been having either 2 slices of toast with bovril, 2p or 1 poached egg on 2 toast 10p. I'm on tea at the moment too, but I also like cafetiere coffee, which I calculate as 8p per 6 cup cafetiere, so that lasts me a day or two!
CW18, :rotfl:Lol about what your son said! I honestly haven't done any secret store cupboard filling, I promise, scout's honour!
Sian the green, you sound like a nice lodger, when can you move in?!:D
OOOOh and hello to new cardiff-based foraging reader, I'm really sorry, I meant to jot down your name as I read through but I forgot! Places we have discovered so far which you might like to go a' foraging:
Wenallt for nettles and blackberries (very soon!)
Bute park arboretum for lime leaves and rowan berries
Taff trail up near Llys tal-y-bont, wild rocket and sorrel.
Hope that helps!
Hugs to you all. I am quiet at the mo, but you are not forgotten!
Love Weezl x

yay weezl! good to see you!
I've had a manic few days with the girls but they have a friend to stay till monday so I'm hoping they'll be happy to stay at home and play today, meaning I can catch up on things - laundry and baking being high priorities. DH keeps bringing in handfuls of french beans (which I don't like) so need to do something with those today too! Got lots of fruit that needs using up as well so I need to be a bit inventive today as I can't bear to throw it out.
I've made my first batch of yoghurt using all the helpful suggestions from this thread. I'm not completely happy with it, but it's not a failure by any means as I reckon it's edible. I can taste the fact that it's made with UHT milk, but the girls like yog with honey and I think that will disguise the flavour. But DH tasted it and thought it was fine so maybe it's me being overly critical?
I tried straining it through a tea towel which was a messy process. I think it would have worked better with finer material so might have to buy some muslin.
Am i right in saying I can use the liquid (the whey?) in bread. I'm making pizza today so could I use it in the dough?
on the subject of butternut squash - we have one flower!
also - on using up stale bread, you can whizz it up into breadcrumbs and put it in the freezer. good for toppings or treacle tart. although french toast does sound yummy!weaving through the chaos...0 -
Morning all
Our bit of rain has just developed into a good old thunder storm :T so no watering the veggies for me today
Sian.. all my veggies are in tubs..im in army housing so if i dug up the lawn i would have to make it right again before i left .. everything is doing really well..
I think you would be fine with squashes etc.. we do get some scorching days -but i don't find this climate that much different to our own in the UK;)
Hi shaz.. i read up a while a go and butternut squash are winter squash -so shouldn't be ready until autumn :T so it sounds like we are right on schedule.. i decided to grow them as they can be stored..so will be great for the winter soups .. im hoping my sweet potatoes do the same -although they need 150days of warmth so im not sure how well my 1st attempt will do
Of my 30 tomato plants quite a few are plum, baby, etc grown from seeds from a tomato in the fridge and they are doing probably better than the packet seeds :T
Well i have got through my 1st week of Augusts GC having only spent that 2c..so im a happy bunny -the €20 i allowed will be saved for if i spot any super bargains..if not its staying in the bank :T ...
Im still in awe at some of the wonderful things folks are doing on here but im slowly tweaking here and there and getting costs down..and we seem to be ating even better than before.. I guess its just a case of shopping and cooking wisely...
have a great day everyone-6 -8 -3 -1.5 -2.5 -3 -1.5-3.50 -

Hi Phizzimum
Just popping in to say I strain my HM yoghurt through coffee filter papers - didn't buy specially, just happened to have some.
And the whey certainly can be used in baking - have used for scones and bread.
