hi, was going to install dreamweaver and i just need to know if it will conflict with my front page settings if I tick yes to all these? If it will, which ones should be unticked?
Active server pages (asp)
Java server pages (jsp)
Cold-fusion cfm, cfc)
ASP.NET (asp.ascx)
PHP (php, php3)
Javascript (js)
Cascading style sheets (css)
Extensible markup language (xml)
I need frontpage to be fully workable, so cannot afford to lose any of the settings to dreamweaver, at least at this stage.
many thanks in advance for your help xx

i think you should be ok - it looks like a 'file type association' style question and if that's the case then the worst that will happen is you will have to right click those file types and forcibly select 'open with..' from the resulting context menu to get them opening with frontpage. however, as you seem to prefer FP i'd leave all those options unticked and have the 'open with..' option applying to dreamweaver. is homesite still around? i always preferred that to either of the above"Don't go around saying the world owes you a living. The world owes you nothing. It was here first." (Mark Twain)0

The trouble with me unticking all the boxes is I dont know when or how to get them back when i get round to needing them, ie when i publish the new site.
Which ones will conflict? and will that be whilst designing it or only when i go to publish?
can say i've ever heard of homesite tho?0 -
You don't need to worry about, its just file association, By ticking on file association those files will be opened in Dream Weaver instead of Front Page. You can change these file associations later, also you can use Open With feature to select which editor you wanna use."Money saving is often a science, investment is often an art."...MSE0

if i untick all the boxes, how do i go about changing them all over? as i wouldnt be sure which one to choose individually, in "open with".0

ok - all the file association settings do is tell the pc which program to open a file with. so lets say you have an asp page on your machine and you double click it to open it, at the moment (before you install DW) it will automatically open the file with frontpage.
you don't say why you are installing the new software just that you need FP to work fully at the moment.
i don't have DW installed personally (been a while!) but there will be a settings or options section within it to allow you to associate file types with it as you wish regardless of what you choose during install.
as to using 'open with..' - go back to that asp file from earlier - if you want to open it in FP just double click (at the moment) however, once you have DW installed and have unchecked all the file associations for it you can then right click that asp file and select the open with option. you will probably have to browse to the folder where DW is installed at this point and select the DW exe file (will most likely show as the DW logo and will have a .exe extension). so as to you not being sure which to choose - it's just personal preference - again, we don't really know why you're installing the new prog so can't offer more help there.
oh and homesite is another editor: http://www.macromedia.com/software/homesite/"Don't go around saying the world owes you a living. The world owes you nothing. It was here first." (Mark Twain)0 -
is asp the only one for frontpage?
I currently have a website done on frontpage, which was my first attempt. I am happy with it, but would like to build another site. (maybe more than one, as others have shown interest). I currently update my site daily, so would still want to be able to do this, whilst i'm working on new sites in dreamweaver.0 -
i just used an asp as an example to show how the file associations work.
ok, so as you know frontpage and would just be learning DW i suggest you untick all the association options when installing DW so they stay with frontpage. then the simplest thing to do is load DW when you want to work with it and open the files / projects you want to work on from within the program."Don't go around saying the world owes you a living. The world owes you nothing. It was here first." (Mark Twain)0 -
thanks, really appreciate your help xx0
