Yes, they will be fruit flies.

Get an empty jar, put some smelly liquid in the bottom, wine or vinegar will do, add a drop of washing up liquid (breaks the surface tension of the liquid so they drown), cover with clingfilm and peirce several holes in the top.

Leave near the worst affected area and the flies will be attracted to the liquid and drown.

If I remember rightly these can live down your sink plughole too, anywhere moist and rottenish.

  • We have had a really bad problem with them this Summer. I get the hoover out and suck the little blighters up the pipe!!
I am often seen at all hours of the day....and night, chasing them around the kitchen.

We've had a problem too this year, usually only if there is rotten fruit in the bowl but we went on holiday recently, cleaned the fruit bowl out before we went but came home to fruit flies in the kitchen. Will keep the compost bin outside and fruit bowl empty until they are gone. Any idea how long that should take?

    Good morning,

Not sure where to post this but hope someone can help.

For the past week or so my flat seems to be infested by little (fruit?) flies. They seem to be resistant to fly spray unless you chase them around the room with the stuff (breathing in the fumes as you go) and the sticky fly paper is not attracting them either.

How do I get rid? I dont mind the odd fly but this is starting to creep me out!

    Thanks

check your fruit bowl ,lurking baddies cause fruit flies, other than that have a look around outside to see where they may be coming from, they circulate in air streams and look if they are playing tag when you try to swat them, maybe a lemon scented candle may deter, but i think your best bet is find the source good luck feed xx
  • They love a good drink.....

I've always done this with wine, but also had good success with brandy and sherry:

put a bit in the bottom of a jar, or leave a bit in the bottom of the wine bottle. Stretch some cling film over the top and poke in holes with tip of a sharp knife. Clear away, put in fridge any other food/fruit etc. They will all get into the jar, but not be able to get out.....(but at least die happy!)

I wash the fruit bowls and potato basket, fling anything fluffy they might like.. leave the compost caddy open so they land in there.. spray in the caddy.. close the lid and take outside and empty.. then wash it out. All bins are emptied and washed too. And check plants they live in their rotting bits too.

they usually are gone in a day or 2

I have noticed they like wine already!!

Just be careful they are not woodworm beetle, this is the time of year they fly to mate. You often see them on windowsills as they are attracted to the light.

It really surprided me that woodworm was a beetle, that they fly and that they are so small.

Best way is to erradicate places where they breed, such as fruit on the turn :)

As this has fallen from the front page of OS, I'll add it to the existing thread to keep ideas together.
