Danged fruit flies!!

  • Just wanted to second all the advice about alcohol. Mine like a nice rose wine and white is also very popular (or maybe that's just me!). Just half a centimeter is enough in the bottle, then cover the top with cling-film, poke holes in (as mentioned above) and they commit mass-suicide.

I had good results too with a just-drunk smoothie (milk/banana/orange/mango). Left it on the side and noticed later that a large colony had landed - so cling-filmed that too and it worked well!

I had a problem with these last year, and as I won't use fly sprays etc I left Henry plugged in and every time I saw more I just vacuumed them up! I found they were settling on the top of my kitchen cabinets, especially on some wicker storage baskets I have up there,a quick smack with the hoover stick made them fly and then up the pipe to fruitfly heaven! After a few days I only saw the occasional lonely one or two, quickly the problem abated.

Think fruit flies are what I've got suddenly dancing about in the kitchen ! Tiny little things that are and try as I might, is they land on the window and I swipe at them they're still there !!
Don't know what they should suddenly appear...........can't remember having them other years. So, have to put OH's plonk to a better use I think..............lol

  • Where do they come from though???
I didn't see any at all in my kitchen this evening, when making the tea, but a couple of hours later, after leaving a half drunk glass of wine on the worktop, there were masses of them!!
Do they just lurk in corners waiting for you to leave something nice and sweet laying around??

  • At the weekend I noticed that there were some horrible little tiny flies swirling around my fruit bowl and found that there was an apple which had all rotted (only bought at the weekend so must have been bad) and they seemed to be coming from that. I threw the apple out and washed all the other fruit and the bowl, but they have persisted. Yesterday in desperation I put the remaining apples in the green waste and scrubbed everywhere in the kitchen with stardrops and then used antibacterial cleaner after that. That seemed to get rid of them but just before when I put something in the swing bin I noticed that they were flying around it again. Does anyone know how to get rid of them?

    Little flies....

These will be fruit flies - drosophilia sp? which hang around rotting fruit - and also composting bins.

They arent a problem but a menace to winemakers as they turn wine to vinegar if they get in.

Once the smell of the rotting fruit has gone and the bins cleaned they should go. Well the ones I had did.

You could tempt them outside with an overripe orange and a few stern words ?

I've been cleaning the kitchen and had a swarm of these  When I put the dead nectarine on the compost heap, and the remaining ones into the fridge, they all disappeared :D

I'll add this to the existing fruit flies thread so that you can see what everyone else does ;)
