Computer Beeping And Mouse Freezing-help Or Ideas Please

Hi,my computer has been beeping then the mouse freezes for a second or two,sometimes it freezes totally.
I have AVG free edition,it has found a virus recently.
Not very computer literate so any help explained simply! would be great.
It is windows xp home.

Could be something overheating. just in case its some sort of spyware do some scans with these

but i doubt it will be is the computer in a well ventilated place and have you cleaned all the dust out?

As Thomas says, the most likely cause of the beeping is that the CPU is overheating - possibly if some malware is running it at very high utilisation, or possibly because dust has built up inside the PC or a fan has failed.

Most, if not all, current CPUs will protect themselves by going into thermal shutdown if things go too far.

As suggested, fix the possible malware first, then take a look inside for excessive dust - you'll get a general idea without taking apart, as the state of the power supply fan will usually give an indication of how much crud is inside.
