Skype

Have just downloaded Skype, and have only as yet done a test to see if I can hear back the ten second recording I make. All well and fine, and I can hear what I have recorded, but ... the sound is not only coming through the headset but also through the speakers I have as part of my setup. I tried the mute button on the keyboard but then I don't seem to hear anything.

Any ideas?

I take it that you are plugging the headphones into sockets at the front of the computer.
If that is the case then it looks like the manufacturer did not set up the links on the computer motherboard correctly. Basically there are links - small plastic covered metal connectors - which join pins which come out of the motherboard. These pins have small plugs which connect through to the front sockets. Usually there are two links joining the output for each stereo channel.

If you can look at the motherboard manual it will show the audio connectors. It may also tell you how to wire it correctly.

Otherwise its best if you take it to your local independent computer shop ( See http://www.nascr.net/members.php?TB=home1 ( National Association of Specialist Computer Retailers ) . They will be able to wire it correctly for you for reasonable fee.

Many thanks for your response, Fraserca. My computer is brand new, although we purchased the tower separately from the monitor and keyboard.

You are correct in thinking I am plugging the headset into the front of the tower into the two small coloured round pins at the front.

I may go back to the shop and have a word with them about this.

Meanwhile you can just plug in the headphones directly to the back panel of the computer. Green ( sound ) to green and pink ( microphone ) to pink. ie Disconnect the speakers when you are Skypeing !

Out of interest where did you buy it?

When you say "it" I assume you mean the tower and what I call the "gubbins". It was purchased locally from a computer shop.

Do not really want to have to start messing with the back of the tower, as it is not that an easy job to get to, being positioned as it is under the desk.
