My quote

I have done a fair bit of renovation work myself on my own properties and have just recently set up my own business - Although i am confident at a lot of the work involved, I'm finding it a little tricky pricing the right quote. I want the customer to be happy, but also need to make me some money.....don't want to end up after the work to have made 30 quid a day !!!

In bristol this is the work required to be done :
-Plasterboard and skim ceiling 3m x 2.5m
-rendering of some damaged walls, then floor to wall tiling in small bathroom
-refit elec shower (wiring and tray already there)
-Rerun pipework to fit a new cistern to existing toilet
-Fit washbasin with cold supply only, but outside wall needs drilling thru for waste
-fit worktop in kitchen with sink, cold tap and single point hot water heater
-half height tiling in kitchen area with skim plastering above

I've quoted £1550 for all that. He would provide al materials. This is in Bristol.

I think this is a very reasonable quote but he seemed to nearly pass out when i told him !!! Any feed back would be much appreciated

Dan

You get that with some customers but you need to stand firm.If you're confident your prices are correct, then all you can do is wait for the yay or neigh from them.If you compromise on prices and the job starts to get where you are not going to earn a decent living then you will start to cut corners on materials and workmanship.I've been there and there is nothing worse for morale than working on a job where you know you are not making,or worse still, losing money. If you have just started out you will make mistakes,we all do.You will also learn quickly. Can't afford not to.

    Good luck.

P.S. some customers will never be happy,no matter what the price and standard of work.Just the way it is.

Hi dan, unfortunately this happens quite a lot, and its worse if the client hasnt had any work done in the house for some years, it can be a shock to the system lol.

Sometimes I am hesitant in actually telling them for the above reason, and if they ring me to enquire why, or to haggle on the price, I always advise them to get more quotes, infact I say to them, 'I would prefer if you got some more quotes', as I know I am less expensive than the majority, and after the client has had in other quotes, they always come back to me.:D

Im doing a job for an old guy at the moment, prepare, gable end with chimney stack, side wall, garden wall, paint 2 coats of sandtex, undercoat and gloss 1 window. I quoted him £850 inc materials and scaffolding. I reckoned on max of 4 days work, I know have 1 day left, which will bring it to 3 days in total. He aked for a discount.

I think the older generation really have no idea how much we NEED to earn to just make a living.

    Hello dandowding

I've moved your thread to the 'Is This Quote Fair' board, where it is better suited.

Hi, Martin’s asked me to post this in these circumstances: I’ve asked Board Guides to move threads if they’ll receive a better response elsewhere(please see this rule) so this post/thread has been moved to another board, where it should get more replies. If you have any questions about this policy please email abuse@moneysavingexpert.com.
