economy 10 advice

I was wondering if anyone on hear uses economy 10. My HA are taking out our storage heaters and replacing it with economy 10, radiators. Has anyone found it cheaper than economy 7? I have also been trying to find the cheapest supplier, but non of them seem to list economy 10 on their tariffs:confused: . I am currently supplied by eon and even they are been difficult about fitting the new meter for economy 10.

Both E7 and E10 are only cheaper if you use them at the right times, and with the right equipment. E10 usually has three 'cheap rate' times, which vary by area, but are typically overnight (after midnight-6 for instance), a late afternoon boost (around 5) and an evening boost (around 10).

It is worth remembering though that all units used outside these times are a lot more expensive than if you had a standard meter. For that reason it is worth setting your washing machine etc. going on a timer. A lot of people don't understand this but as a general rule, you need to be using at least 20-30% of your energy during off peak on E7 and 30-40% during off peak on E10 for it not to cost you more than a standard meter. If you're not likely to use the afternoon boost on your new radiators, you could consider staying on E7, which more or less everyone supports - and you might even save money by doing this!

That said, if your HA is installing radiators designed for E10, then this might be a good option, but you are right in that many companies won't support it, or won't take new customers on it. For this reason alone, I wouldn't recommend people going on to E10, as you will most liekly be stuck on your local suppliers 'deemed' tariff (i.e. paying far too much)

Hope that helps (although it might just make you more confused!)

I was thinking of changing our economy 7 heaters to economy 10 - how much do ec 10 heaters cost (if you don't mind me asking). I'm with swalec - I wonder if they would allow this?
  • Owain.davis. Thanks, that did make sense and I know now were I have been going wrong with my economy 7. I don’t have a choice about going on econ 10, its my HA that are changing it. I want to try and find the cheapest supplier and change to them before the change but am having trouble finding the info online. Once again thanks for the advice, I will from now on be trying to put at least 90% of my washing on during the night.

I have E10 through Hydro at the moment which was fine until the last price update when they increased it 24% on the E10 rate and 21% on the peak rate which has made it £70 a year cheaper to switch back to my previous tariff with Scottish power and I fixed at these rates until 2011.
