BBC perpetuating TV licence myth

On the BBC letters page, someone asked if they needed a TV licence to watch the BBC iPlayer on their PC. Not surprisingly, the BBC published responses which said yes.
Today they published one correct reply which said the BBC iPlayer website says you don't need a TV licence to use it but then added thier gumpf about having to have a TV licence to own TV equipment and if you watched the iPlayer on a PC with a TV card you needed a licence.
The BBC ought to be able to report the true facts without any personal bias.

The BBC website simply published a letter from another user, in the same way that MSE 'publishes' endless incorrect information everyday within the forum.
You need to learn the difference between what the BBC publishes/ reports as fact, and information in communities that they rely on the user to research and confirm themselves.
I don't see the problem. If you are criticising the BBC for this, then you need to be criticising MSE also.Gone ... or have I?0 -

Correct !
The letter, is, to be blunt a load of ***** **** !
"You need a licence if you have equipment that can decode broadcast TV signals"
1. You don't need a licence if "you have equipment".
2. "Can decode" , same as 1 above - and - "decode" is not used in the Law covering TV licensing.
3. "broadcast TV signals" - in this case you don't need a Licence if you are on cable !
The author of this letter was making it up as he went along !0 -

Legally you need a licence for any television receiving equipment such as a TV, digital box, video recorder, PC, laptop or mobile phone to watch or record TV programmes as they're being shown
