Can I put my Baxi boiler in a cupboard?

  • Bestyman,

I don't necessarily disagree with you. I'd rather them get the correct info as regards to the regs, than have them do it once and have it condemned and have to do it again. Most of what I've written is based on manufacturers instruction and not gas safety regs.

The cupboard being left open at the top or bottom isn't the problem, it's the possibility that someone may not understand why it's been left and may replace the panel that is the problem.

We could talk all day about the regs and how stupid some of them may seem to be, and I'm sure we'd agree on alot, but I think if someone asks the question then it's right that they should get the information they've asked for to the letter of the law, as this may save them considerable grief from inspectors and service engineers in the future and in terms of clearances for heat it is a genuine safety consideration (my mate had a PCB catch fire in a Suprima he'd fitted, would you sleep soundly in a room above that if it were mounted on a combustible surface?).

P.S. I bet your mate's pipe clips were the non lockover ones!

    Cheers MSP,
Think your right about the pipe clips . Re the suprima , well petrol pipes on cars are made of rubber ( combustable rubber at that) and still happy to drive em. Looks like we gotta agree to disagree on this one .

Don`t suppose you cover Leeds area at all? Used to pass all my gas work on but last guy was unreliable .People ring from yellow pages everyday ( honest, no mention of gas work or corgi in the ad) wanting boiler repairs but have to turn them away.

    Regards

  • Sorry bestyman, Leeds is a bit of a hike from Kent, cheers for the offer though.

My point is that getting out the rule book and the micrometers and quoting this reg and that dimension is not the answer.

Sorry to disagree with you on this Paul but if you had wished to stay Corgi Registered it would have been the only answer. I understand your frustration with your previous jobs, but there are two sides to it, and when someone asks for this kind of advice, they usually want it to be correct as far as the law is concerned, and in that case quoting the regs is the only answer. I have to be honest and say that I haven't had to condemn a job that I didn't think was unsafe due to the law alone. Most problems that can be classified as Immediately Dangerous or At Risk usually are exactly that. The problem is that there is still alot of confusion over this.

With regards to this post, if you are putting the cupboard in now, the regs dictate that it must be correct. If, however, you are viewing an existing installation, as long as there is some ventilation it can be classified as Not To Current Standards even if the ventilation isn't as much as it should be, and can be left as it is. The same applies for conventionally flued boilers, provided they pass the spillage and flue-flow tests, and is vented to outside air and not just to an adjoining room. I don't have as big a problem with Corgi as some plumbers and overall I think the system is starting to work as the public are more and more aware, despite the calls you get via the Yellow Pages. There will always be those that are willing to pay someone £20 from the pub who isn't registered, I recently got scammed giving an Insurance quote for someone that I'm sure took the insurance money and got Mr. Cowboy to do the work for half the price. I did condemn that boiler as it was a Profile with a damaged case seal that had been 'repaired' with some duct tape. No doubt their 'friend that was a plumber and used to be Corgi registered but isn't now' (not a dig at you Paul but their exact words to me describing their 'friend' that hadn't even spotted that their boiler was in a lethal condition) reinstated it and probably told them I was on the make. They more than likely paid him £200 to replace their leaking gas supply and pocketed the rest of the £2000 I quoted for the new boiler that was absolutely necessary. I hope it's not a cold winter, or they could be in for a very long sleep if that damaged case hasn't been replaced.

    Seaniboy,
You seem a little confused. As the appliance in question is room sealed MS plumber and I were discussing ventalation for compartment cooling ( not air for combustion which all 3 of us plumbers know it is a totally different matter and robowen made theis very clear in his post). Building a cupboard around a room sealed boiler could in no way cause carbon monoxide to escape. Perhaps you are the one who should educate yourself. We were discussing a technicality, and as MSP pointed out it is only very new corgi regs the prohibit leaving the top and bottom off.

To bring words like MURDER and TIME into the discussion is stupid. Read the thread and you will see that MSP never said that Robewen was wrong and certainly never implied anyone would die, he simply stated that certain other requirements should be met. I have never advised people to compromise on safety.

My 1st post was to MSP over his comments to dismiss robowens advise ( a bit harsh in my opinion ) and my post was to say that what robowen said wasnt as bad as he made out. Sensible ( even enjoyable)debate followed without reverting to name calling , that was untill you came along.
For the record, I have no intention of doing time or murdering anyone. If you do insist on accusing me of murder at least get the cause correct, certainly not carbon monoxide poisioning from building cupboards round BF appliances as this is IMPOSSIBLE.

After 3 years at building college aged 17 to 20 city and guilds ( lasts a lifetime) , gas qualifications in gas safety, water heaters, central heating boilers and even tumble dryers ( these qualifications only last 5 years as mentioned before) , 10 years in corgi, many years doing gas safety inspections and 22 years experience I don`t think I need to educate myself anymore and certainly won`t be going all electric, besides Im not part P compliant.

I didn`t come on here to offend people , I even pointed that out to MSP at the end of my first post as I realise it is not always easy to read a post as it was intended and offence can be taken when not meant. Your comments howevor are innacurate( in fact totally wrong) and to imply I am a murderer is absurd .

Please post again when you have something sensible, factual, constructive ,unoffensive or relevant to add.

    Paul

  • Shame I got on here too late to see that post Paul. Who did you murder, a bad payer?? :rotfl:

It was because of these types of post that the IPHE public forum was closed and is now limited to a members-only technical forum. No-one has been accused of murder on that one.

    Cheers.
