movie download scam?

Hi all
My partner paid $20 to subscribe to a site that promised a whole year of being able to download free movies legally. The site is called https://www.onemovieplace.com but so far we have not been able to download anything. The download of the first movie we tried seemed to have been interrupted by an anti-virus update (typical!) but recently the site has a message on it that it is down for maintenance but that members can still log in. We logged in but every attempt at downloading just gives an error message.
I noticed this evening that the small print at the bottom of the site says the following:
Disclaimer:
MEMBERSHIP is understood by the term "as long as the site is online and operational".
You understand that no movies, software, music, games or any other form of media, can be downloaded directly from our servers. The movies, software, music, games or any other form of media are not available first hand from our site, only second hand.
User understands that this site is just for the teaching of media programs and provides only public information.
This site is not affiliated in any way of any organizations or groups that may be trading, swapping, etc. illegal files.
Additionally, this site is in no way affiliated with the makers of any software linked to on this site and assumes no responsibility arising from its use.
I am now thinking that we have been had and this is just a scam.
Question: does anyone have any experience of this site?
Does anyone else have any experience of a movie downlaod site that does work, on a money saving 'it's cheaper than buying new dvds' kind of basis that they can recommend please?!?
Thanks

It might be a scam but more importantly, and judging only by the disclaimer, it is entirely illegal or provides access to illegal downloads while charging you for the privelage. If it was legal they would have the downloads, they would charge much more and they wouldn't have such disclaimers.0

He's going to have to put this one down to experience (and not be such a fool next time). How could you honestly expect to get as many movies as you want legally for only $20?
This site is a P2P network (and a rogue one at that). If you download latest films from it, you are downloading illegally just as if you went straight out and used a P2P application to get them for nothing.
Have a look at THIS site. Scroll down the list, and you will see your site on there. The beginning will give you an idea of what you've fallen for (a rogue P2P site masquerading as a legal buisness).
The site owners obviously set this up as a short term venture. In there contact details, their email address is a free Yahoo account. Not a good sign............

Most definitely a scam. As the saying goes - if something looks too good to be true, it probably is. $20 for unlimited films just screams "scam" at the top of its lungs
To my knowledge there's not currently a legal way to download top films from the web, although the following articles may prove of interest (all from BBC website)

I must admit that when aforementioned partner said about the site I thought it sounded too much of a bargain, but had heard so many folk talking about cheap downloads that it might have been plausible. He'd signed up for it by then anyway, so it was too late.
I know there are sites for cheap music downloads, some legal and some not so legal, and was concerned that this one should be legal. Not being too technically up on how the downloads work, I just wasn't sure. Guess I'll stick to buying thru loaded247 instead.
Thanks for the input tho.0 -

I've just looked at the link and there's hundreds of sites on their list. What I don't understand is that the site also has ads at the top of its pages, apparently condoning similar sites. I clicked on one, ares.com, and it is a p2p site, but it has a disclaimer at the bottom in very small print saying that though their software allows file sharing, it may be illegal to do so in some countries. I don't really understand the technology involved, but it seems to me that, at the moment, the only cheap way of getting a dvd is to go to a regular supplier and buy new, at the cheapest price available.
Someone suggested renting dvds from Blockbusters or similar, and copying them at home. Clearly this is just as illegal, and I understand that a lot of them are encrypted now anyway, so you cannot copy them. As you say, nothing that sounds that good is gonna be that good.0 -
There's a few dvd rental companies with 14 - 30 day free trials , if you cancel before the end of the free trail you pay nothing.
I used them all & now pay lovefilm £15 a month and always have a film rented, only downside is you don't always get what you want to watch like you can in a vid shop.0 -
P2P isnt illegal.Its downloading copyrite material that is.eg films,books,software.
So long as their 'movies' are things like private home movies, movies made on mobile phones, that sort of thing, they would get away with it.0
