The foliage will turn yellow and start to die down, lift them on a dry day. If you want to store them, lie tem out in a dry place not touching each other. After a week or so you can plait the leaves together to make a string.
Any that look a bit diseased or ahve thick neck or have thrown a flower shoot, you should use striaght away.Just call me Nodwah the thread killer0 -
Onions can be eaten from the time they are about as big as spring onions and any time after that.
Are you saying - when they are ready to be able to be stored? Then what Nodwah said. But, if you just want to pick and use them from the ground, you can do so at any time - i grow onions all year round and just pick them as I need them.0 -
Oh great, I,m going to pull one up now then. I cant wait to see if they are up to scratch. How sad is this, I,m all excited.:T:jDabbler in all things moneysaving.Master of none:o

I get excited every time I pull one of my onions up - it's been 3 years now. I've got one on the go that is about 6 inches diameter - when we get back from hols I am doing a huge onion bhajee with just that one onion.0 -

Hi
When did you sow them? You do know onions take absolutely months to get to a decent size? I am currently pulling the ones that I sowed last September - the ones sown this spring are literally just spring onions now.
If they are sown properly you should be able to see 90% of the onion on the surface of the soil anyway. It's only the last bit and the roots that should be underground.0 -
If you used onions "sets" then they will not be ready for a while, as nodwah says
If from seed then the other replies are correctNumerus non sum0 -
I'm only just pulling up the ones I planted as sets last autumn too, and even some of those have been on the small side. I wouldn't expect this year's onions to be ready for another month or two at least.“You can please some of the people some of the time, all of the people some of the time, some of the people all of the time, but you can never please all of the people all of the time.”0
