Windows "Serious Fault" Messages

Hi
in the last few days (about 8 I think) I have twice received MSN Windows messages saying: "the system has suffered a serious fault from which it cannot recover please send error report to MSN". These have occurred during the period that my machine takes to boot up existing programmes after log in i.e. when the machine is left to its own devices and I am not carrying out any tasks.
After reporting a MSN window opens up which gives very little other information other than to say the system needs restarting.
Should I be worried about this? Is there something I could be doing to prevent it happening again? Is there likely to be damage caused to my PC at these times?
There doesn't seem to have been any change in performance after one of these messages and AVG etc are not registering any problems.
Any advice gratefully received.
Thanks.

It all depends if the fault is entirely with messenger, known for vulnerability and problems.
To isolate the cause windows has a neat utility called msconfig.
In there you can stop all non-essential start-up programs loading.
To access this, press the start button and in the "run" box type msconfig, go to page tab "start up" and uncheck all the boxes, then reboot
Any problems?, to re-instate programs one by one to see which is causing the error simply check the box again.
