But what has made it easier is that I know that there its hardly likely that someone I know will walk in and ask why I'm doing what I'm doing....perhaps this is why OH didn't want me to take the job in the pub, lol!
DO any other DFWers who have a 2nd job feel like this or is it just me?
I don't have a second job at the moment, but years ago I did....in a bingo hall. I also thought that hardly anyone I knew would walk in.....but I was amazed at the amount of secret bingo addicts I knew:rotfl:
I have to say it was a great, stress free job but tiring on the feet and I used to go home smelling of an ashtray (sorry all you smokers, I am not anti-smoking but this was definitely the case). I would get home each evening and my husband would ban me to the shower before he would let me anywhere near the rest of the house:rotfl: I would imagine with the new smoking laws prohibiting smoking in such places this wouldn't be an issue now.
I did feel that having a second job and paying tax on the whole lot made it feel like I was working for peanuts...but hey we needed the money and it was a very social/stress free job. I would definitely recommend it.0 -
ii do feel a bit shame in that i never seem to be at home and i think my child suffers for it. If I died tomorrow I will never think, boy I wish i had worked harder. That being said, if i dont get myself out of this mess, no one else will. I got us here and I will get us out!!DFW 228 LONG H 68

That's an interesting question!! I never would have thought of being ashamed of a second job, and I think plenty of people have them these days, for some its a way of survival rather than paying off debt etc. My Mum had a second job for around 7 years, it was started as a way to give the family a bit extra cash, but after my Dad walked out helped her to keep going financially. She gave it up Christmas just gone because she was a bit tired out and she's not getting any younger!! I had a second job up till recently when the contract ended, and even though I'm debt free now really need to get a clump of savings behind me before i eventually get back to uni so am considering taking on another one!!1st LBM (Pre-Career Change): 01 March 2006 Debt Free Date: 28 April 2008 | Worst Debt: £7244.36

I can definitely relate to this feeling. I don't think the feeling will change even though you know why you are doing the extra work (part of guilt trips parents face unfortunately). However, you know that you are 'not there' for positive reasons and not just because you don't care or love your child. You should be proud of the positive statements in your comment above.0 -
Many years ago, As a single parent and doing nurse training I took a job in a bingo hall! I had to do it to pay for child care to complete my nurse training! There is nothing wrong with hard work! I still work hard - but earn alot more than i did then! but only because of the second job in the bingo hall! It was well worth it!!! and good fun too!0
