She's probably read them but the 'his dark materials' trilogoy by Phillip Pullman would be good. Nothing to do with Italy but superb books, the first one is called Northen Lights (aka The Golden Compass).

She's read the obvious ones like Harry Potter. I was hoping to find something that she could relate to her holiday, which is why I was looking at the ancient Rome stuff.

Oh Sorry, how about Gibbon's Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire.;) Far from obvious. Or I actually quite enjoyed Tacitus' annals at that age in translation, but perhaps it was just easier going than the pluperfect subjunctive!

I'd second the suggestion of Alan Garner, I was also reading Susan Cooper - The Dark is rising etc at that age.

Okay - along the lines of StevenSaylor, but for children, how about The Roman Mysteries series?

    Have a look here

There are quite a few in the series or there is an omnibus book.

At 12, would the Robert Harris book "Pompeii" be too complex?

My 11 year old loves the Roman Mysteries as suggested by mrcow and elsien earlier. Some of the characters are girls so that could be an advantage
It's taken me years of experience to get this cynical
