French doors

i'm shocked - i've just been quoted £750 for new doors to be supplied and fitted.

there are sliding patio doors in at the mo so its literally a case of swopping them over.

the trouble is, i know a great bloke who's put really good quality windows is really cheap so i was expecting about £600 so i nearly fell off the chair when he said £750.

the measurement is 2000 width x 1800 drop.

problem is i've been looking at wickes and a similar size would be just under £400. I know i have to account for fitting but surely not £350.

would getting some from wickes really be much worse quality than getting them from the window fitter.

    Yes.

So, the £750 is made up of materials+ mark up/ labour/ overheads/ responsibility and experience/ FENSA registration (should be or would be paying local authority £75 ish)/ maybe disposal of old doors.

    Soon mounts up eh??
  • that price is a fair price as explained as above

  • That's a fair price for good quality doors. The ones from Wickes and B&Q are rubbish.Fitted some B&Q ones in feb and already been back to them twice.Won't be fitting them again.

We fitted wickes ones last week, cant fault them, 2400x2100, better than the crap Barratt Homes put in previously.
  • All I can say is, it's money well spent. We had the sliding patio doors replaced by French doors last year, excellent.

doh, i'll be seeing him at the weekend and maybe try and at least get him down to £700 as i never get a receipt for work he does so he's not paying vat/fensa etc.

most jobs i have had done recently cost £700 - it seems to be the workmans fav price:

yes wickes/bq doors etc are mass produced at set sizes like anything that is mass produced the generally out of cheaper profiles only come with 2 hinges per door(our doors have 4 hinges)only available with left hand opening .there is no comparison

Stay away from DIY shed doors if you want quality...you really do get what you pay for.

Having said that, a good fitter can make crap look good and a bad fitter can make the best quality windows/doors/bathroom/kitchen etc look bad
