Be vigilant - Halifax X MC

I have a halifax X card, had it since December, and have a 0% rate for 15 months.
Last month the statement said 'next months interest £58.50' (or whatever figure it was)
I noticed that the intrest rate had a figure and was not 0%.

I phoned them and I was told that my June payment was too early, yet this was my May statement, showing my May payment etc, and that I had to pay £60 (or whatever figure) by the 16th June.

I was being charged a late payment fee and interest, yet I'd never missed a payment.
The Halifax guy just kept repeatedly telling me I'd paid May too early, yet it was on my May statement, and that June was now late.

Cutting a long story short the guy then understood that even if I paid the following day, I was still within the payment deadline, so he couldn't be right. He promissed to sort this out, but, another statement arrived on Friday, and they've charged me interest....
Another phone call, they promissed to sort it out,( Refund charged get 0% re-instated) but I wondered how many other people have they done this too.

Check your statements.

  • Check your statement to see if you'd made 2 payments for May, whilst meaning to pay off your June statement. It could be that the Halifax rep is right in that you paid your June payment too early, and it's appeared on your May statement instead ... if that's the case then he's right, you've not made a payment for June. Always pay your bill AFTER you've got it, not before.

But it could be the customer rep was wrong, they are not allways right. and when they are wrong it;s allways the customers fault.
  • I hadn't paid 2 payments for May, and the June payment at the time wasn't due for about 2 weeks. - This relates to the statement I received early June.

I've consistently paid above the minimum payment etc at the beginning of each month, ever since I had a balance.

The guy did understand me in the end and was confused as to why it had happened and just blamed it on a computer blip, which is why I thought I'd mention it here - in case others have been affected.

I've been told again that it's sorted, but I was told that last month, so I'll wait until I see the next statement.

  • "Computer Blip" sounds like an easy way of either fobbing you of if the advisor didn't understand what he was looking at or not wanting to argue with you if you'd made a wrong payment.

"Blips" just don't happen in the sort of systems that banks use because everything is so rigorously monitored and checked therefore there is a logical explanation. As others have said get your statements and carefully match the payment dates to the dates that payments were credited to your account, if there's a still a discrepancy you don't understand request an explanation in writing from the bank. That should allow you to work out what's going on.
