I had trouble with docx files and others on my Mac so someone told me to download NeoOffice, its free, and now I have no more trouble. Also you can choose lots of formats to write in.0

I'll stick with Open Office myself
Nonsense!
Learn to use the ribbon properly and the program is infinitly more efficient to use than the clunky menus of previous versions of office!0 -
Fair enough, each to their own :-)0

I used Office 2003 ever since it came out (still use it at work). I'm already faster and more productive on 2007 using the Fluent/Ribbon interface than I ever was on 2003. In fact I wish more of my apps had a ribbon interface (some actually do now). The "normal" menu system was never intended to have too many endless functions added to it over time. Extremely inefficient. One or two clicks of the mouse versus sub sub sub menu rollover and searching...
Any kind of change takes time to relearn but not adapting simply for the sake of not wanting to learn something new or change existing methods is kind of cutting your nose to spite your face and isn't necessarily beneficial longer term. Could you imagine people not wanting to use mice when they were introduced because they were "used to" the keyboard only? I wouldn't be surprised if OO at some point adopted a Ribbon interface or at least an add on when more people use it and realise its power as a UI."She is quite the oddball. I've downloaded open office and it does serve some purposes. however, I've put my CV on it and tried to send it out as an attachment via e-mail but firms say they can't open it because its not word. All this faffing about is driving me nuts. Can't I just download Word for free from anywhere?
For emailing CVs, I would always recommend sending PDF as there can't be a firm in the world who wouldnt be able to open it!
Open Office makes it easy to with its export to PDF option0 -

You're much better off sending any such documents as a pdf doc. They are substantially less likely to be 'tampered' with, and almost everyone and their dog can open them... whatever system they are operating. Also, by creating a pdf doc you reduce the size of that doc. Give it a go... download 'pdf creater' free (just google it). When loaded the pdf creater becomes a printer option when you go to print your doc, select it and you simply save the doc similer to a normal 'save as' operation, but in pdf format.
I pdf virtually every doc I send, it discourages people stealing my work or tampering with what I have sent.
Caution: You wont be able to make adjustments to the created pdf document (unless you have paid for certain versions), so do ensure you also save your CV in the original format you created it in, in order to update for your next job! Good luck.0 -
In word 2007 you can just save as pdf rather than faff about with pdf printers etc."She is quite the oddball. Did you notice how she didn't even get excited when she saw this original ZX-81?"

Same with open office, it's been able to save as PDF for years.
PDF creator is a great free app for creating PDF's from any other applications though, basically anything that can print0
