Returning goods after 28 days

A friend bought a top around 5 weeks ago from Asda, which has still got the price tag/labels on although they have lost the receipt.Does anybody know if they would refund there money on it or at least give them a credit note for the returned item?

I've asked this on here to as to save them going in the shop and getting embarrased etc should the store not refund.

Thanks in advance!

Hi, I live about 50 miles from our nearest Asda, and go every 4 weeks or so, as i have just been rather ill, I missed my last 4 week visit, and had to return my stuff after 6 weeks, I apologised, explained why I wasnt able to come back earlier, and they were very helpful and gave me my refund. However, if you live in more urban areas, thay might not be so forgiving, although this store is in Edinburgh. Give it a go, even if they say no you are still no worse off.

I didn't realise there was a 28 day limit - and took back a swimming costume that was too small for my daughter - when she checked the receipt she told me that it had passed the time limit and couldn't give me a refund. However, I also took something back at the same time without a receipt - and she refunded me the 'price in store that day' which happened to be full price (there wasn't a sale on it). Didn't think about this until I got home - so the following week I took the swimming costume back without the receipt and they gave me the 'price in store that day' which again I was lucky and it happened to be full price. I'm sure she could have offered me this first time round - depends who you get serving you, but you'll probably only get it at the price in store that day.

I don't know if they still have this but I remember seeing that asda have something like a 90 day refund policy on clothing.

Would your friend be happy with an exchange? I think they would do that.

I returned clothes to Asda once, and they were a gift, so I obviously didn't have a receipt. They exchanged them no problem, and I was happy with that.

It's only 28 days for refunds now.

Yes i think under the circumstances an exchange seems the fairest solution.I'll suggest that to my friend and see what asda say.

    Thanks for the replies.

I think in terms of the law it is "reasonable time".

  • When I've had to take things back before when I know I've had them for that bit toooo long, I always just say that I'd just like to have a refund but I can't find the receipt (which happens most times as the receipts always disappear with the kids dummies into that great big black hole!) and all they do is to give you the value onto one of their savings cards, so its a refund of sorts and can be used to buy something else, an other item of clothing or towards your grocery bill at the tills.
Obviously if you have no receipt, then the value of the item would be as it shows up on their till at the time of you going back, otherwise if the item is not in a sale then you would get the full value back onto one of their cards.

Well took it back but they refused, the duty manager said that there is so much stock going missing that unless you have a receipt they wont accept returns for clothing.

I suppose its the shoplifters who've spoilt things for the rest of us when it comes to things like this.
