Quiet, Cornish Wedding 2008

We are hoping to be really anti-social and escape to Cornwall for a quiet wedding (just the 2 of us) and have a big party when we get back.

Does anyone have any experience of either a civil ceremony - in a small, old inn (like a smugglers inn) by a harbour - or in a quaint registry office?

We are down in Cornwall for 2 weeks this September and thought it would be perfect to get married whilst we're there. I particularly have lovely memories of holidays there as a child in Polperro and Mevagissey.

Thanks!

Whereabouts are you planning to stay? If you post on here, I will search for somewhere.

    Hi

We are staying in Mawgan Porth (in our tourer!) but would travel anywhere really. Just somewhere quiet with a picturesque harbour and not too over taken by tourism would be great. I should think most places I remember from my child hood holidays have changed dramatically in 30 years! I found the old mill house in Polperro which is licensed for Civil ceremonies which looks promising - but difficult to know what somewhere is like now after all these years!

    Many thanks

Some friends of mine got married in a beautiful chapel in the middle of nowhere (Penzance/Mousehole area) but for the life of me I cannot find out where it was, despite searching, and my memories of the day are hazy (all I know is we went there in a taxi from Penzance).

Mullion has a lovely harbour, don't know if they do any weddings nearby though.

If I ever get married again (which I don't plan to!) I'd like to get married at the Headland Hotel in Newquay (out of season!)

A little chapel would be perfect - but I understand you have to live in the parish - or at least be there for 15 days before or something! Unless this has changed now? Maybe I'll have to do some investigating ....!

    Thanks

The Blue Hayes Hotel in St Ives is amazing, I wanted to get married there, but its too small for all my guests, but sounds like that would be perfect for you :)http://www.bluehayes.co.uk/site/default.asp

Its the opposite end of Cornwall though, I don't know if that will be a problem.

Wow. It does look stunning. Will have to contact them and see what rates there are just for the 2 of us - as the package quotes for 10. A fab place and price though if you want to take a few family members and friends. So much nicer than the big lavish costly do's we all have so much experience of. Thanks for the idea - will definitely pursue it :j

I have found an hotel for the reception, although I cannot see if you can get married there but it won't hurt to ask:

https://www.pierhousehotel.com - this is in the ancient harbour of Charlestown, St Austell

I have found another hotel where you can be married and have the reception but it doesnt appear to be near the sea:

There is one Inn at Trebarwith Strand nr Tintagel listed on here but the link to the website takes you to some junk search engine. It may be worth ringing them up. You will need to book your registrar though.

The Port William Inn is listed on here: http://www.cornwall-online.co.uk/port-william/leave.htm

This is the site I've got quite a lot of my info from http://www.weddingscornwall.co.uk/?gclid=CKjCisLioJICFQNaMAodcUI3Ng

You might find something else on there :)

Thanks for all the great links - a few of these led to other properties - the Quay Side Inn in Fowey looks promising as does the Steiner Arms. Boscundle Manor would be just perfect but I have this thing about being by the sea - so hard to combine everything! I got the 'Get Married in Cornwall' guide posted to me free from one of the sites with lots of great tips. Hopefully we can work our way through this and some of these sites and plan everything ourselves. Not keen on using a wedding planner - it all sounds a bit structured for me! Trying to keep it a nice relaxed affair with any luck. Will keep you all posted with the progress - especially for those wanting to do something similar!

Really don't want to spend silly money on some huge bash we will still be paying for into our retirement! Much more fun to have a chilled wedding day and a big party when we get home :-)
