Income Tax Refund to your Credit Card (scam)

Hi just to let you know that this morning I received an e-mail supposedly from the Inland Revenue saying that I was entitled to an Income Tax Refund, of some £252.52 payable to my Credit Card.......

Of course they wanted all my card details,,,,load of rubbish, it all looks very professional and official,,,,,but as I have not even applied for any tax refunds how would they know??

They must think that some people came down with the last shower of rain!!

Its a scam....so beware!!!

write back saying you want at least £300 before you part with your credit card number .

By the way tax rebates are sent by cheque

    MOVING THREADS FOR BETTER RESPONSES

Hi, Martin’s asked me to post this in these circumstances: I’ve asked Board Guides to move threads if they’ll receive a better response elsewhere (please see this rule) so this post/thread has been moved to another board, where it should get more replies. Long time away from MSE, been dealing real life stuff..
Sometimes seen lurking on the compers forum :-)
  • The scary thing is, these fraudsters are getting better and better each time. Remember when the Great Nigerian e-mail Scam first started nearly 10 years ago? Back then the grammar and spelling were atrocious, you could tell a scam from a mile away. Nowadays, it's all getting sophisticated along with technology, and even the grammar and spelling are almost (but not quite, thank goodness!) perfect. 99% of us are savvy enough to suss out a scam when we see one, but that's all right for the fraudsters, because all they need really is the gullible/unsuspecting 1%.

That's not always the case. You can supply details on your self assessment return and ask for any rebate to be credited to your bank account.

If you look on the HMRC website, there are instructions for sending copies of these emails to HMRC. They must include full message headers. The idea of this is so that HMRC's fraud department can investigate where these emails are coming from and possibly who is behind them. They have successfully over the past couple of years caught and preosecuted a couple of these scam artists, one of them was actually a company set up with 15 employees constantly sendiong these kind of things and also phoning up people and the tax office trying to get their information.

Any info you give helps to try and stop these people. Although the OP is clever enough to recognise that this email is clearly a scam, unfortunately there are some people daft enough to give them the information they ask for.
