Income Tax Refund to your Credit Card (scam)

Options
Hi just to let you know that this morning I received an e-mail supposedly from the Inland Revenue saying that I was entitled to an Income Tax Refund, of some £252.52 payable to my Credit Card.......

Of course they wanted all my card details,,,,load of rubbish, it all looks very professional and official,,,,,but as I have not even applied for any tax refunds how would they know??

They must think that some people came down with the last shower of rain!!

Its a scam....so beware!!!

  • you'd be surprised at the number of people who have fallen for this. why would inland revenue refund someones card when they won't even have given them the card details previously? also not everyone has a card, if it were genuine they would send an open cheque which can be cashed even if someone doesn't have a bank account.

Yep, it looks OK at first sight, then the aroma of dung arises.

hbc.jpgAfter the last annual calculations of your fiscal activity we have determined that you are eligible to receive a tax refund of 188.50 GBP. Please submit the tax refund request and allow us 6-9 days in order to process it. A refund can be delayed for a variety of reasons. For example submitting invalid records or applying after the deadline.
To access the form for your tax refund, please https://online.hmrc.gov.uk/login?GAREASONCODE=-1&GARESOURCEID=Common&GAURI

Incidentally, HMRC doesn't seem to have a contact for reporting such things.

HMRC do have a contact for reporting these things. You'll find all the info you need on this page: http://www.hmrc.gov.uk/security/fraud-attempts.htm

Incidentally, the above is identical to one I received and if you check the details in the header of the email, you can trace the electronic route the email took. Remember to send the entire email to HMRC and not just a copy of the contents :)
