The metal ones with the 3 halogen bulbs for example..like this for example:

We currently have a strip light in the kitchen, it is a brand new house and they have put a horrible old fashioned strip light in and i want to change that..
Also at the other end where the dining room is there is a normal round light fitting for a hanging type lamp shade, i want to put another one there..
is it just the wiring if so is it hard? will i end up shooting off my ladder if i attemp myself!!
Thanks

Its generally a case of switch off the electrics, and swap the fitting. However note that the standard ring set up means there will be four connections above the lamp (switched-live, ring-live, neutral and earth), but most halogen fittings tend to only provide three (live, neutral and earth). I always just replace the choc-block they provide with a suitable one.
Of course if you're not following what I'm saying, I recommend you get assistance in.0 -
Ok well i have undone the 3 bulb one and underneath are wires with pieces of rope round them?! i cannot see any loose wires to connect to anything which isn't a good start! Maybe i will get a friend to do it!! Thanks for the reply though.0

ok re reading that ..for one we have the standard round light bit against the roof, is this the ring set up? if so do i just connect the 3 wires..?OR do i follow the ceiling rose connection shown in my book! I am very willing and do do most thigs on my own without killing myself so would love to give it a go!
surely it's earth to earth, live to live and neutral to neutral..?
