Compensation for Cancelled Flights

Having had a US/UK flight cancelled at the gate in June (we were in our seats ready for pushback!) I think this makes me qualified to give my " 2 pennys " worth.
If you are flying with a US carrier (We were with American Airways) they are under NO Obligation to offer anywhere near the 600 euros we were expecting per ticket, in fact we got a $200 money off voucher each and $10 each food allowence whilst we waited all day at Boston Airport (9am to 7.30pm) for another flight.
I challenged this with the Airline Users Council and they confirmed that " Flights to the UK with a non european based airline do not come under the new european canellation regs"
A lot of the info out in the public domain wrongly states that if the flight starts or finishes in the EU you will be covered, according to the Airline Users Council this is incorrect.
Makes you think long and hard about flying with a US carrier!

According to the Europa website "The Regulation applies to all flights, including charters, operated by European airlines from or to a European airport and to any flight departing from the European Union."
So it would have applied to if your delay had been on the way out to the US, but as you say, doesn't on the way back.
