Upgrading a laptop to run faster

You should also consider replacing the drive in the laptop with a bigger 7200rpm drive, then a fresh install of windows. It will reduce the battery life a bit but will speed up the whole system.
By drive, I'm assuming you mean hard-drive? What's the advantage of having a 7200rpm over a 4200rpm - does it improve performance by writing faster to and from the drive?0 -
Check underneath the laptop to see if there's an appartment to unscrew to reach the ram otherwise you'll need to unscrew the keyboard, remove a place behind it, unscrew any cd/dvd drive and possibly the fan before you can reach the ram. It's a fiddly job (I used to repair laptops many years ago) but can be done in an hour. Be careful with the screen and don't slip and smash it like I did once...expensive mistake!
thanks. does sound a bit fiddly. I'll take a look, but i know someone who used to fix computers so I'm sure he'll be able to help if I get stuck.0 -

That was the problem with my Fujitsu Siemens, the whole of the back of the laptop has to come off and its certainly not as easy as unscrewing the "ram apartment" that other laptops have. I still have my extra ram sitting here for that reason but I have upgraded another laptop with ease due to that "ram apartment"0 -
i think i may have a ram apartment as there's certainly something to unscrew at the bottom but I'll investigate further at the weekend. I'm determined to have a quicker computer so, at worst, I'll get someone who knows what they're doing look at it.0
