Virgin as ISP with MS Outlook

In brief I moved from one place to another leaving the old Virgin Media package ongoing at the old address and started a new one at my new address (my partner & I separated).

Now, I continued to use the old username and password (partner did not have a pc) at my new address until recently when I got an error on send/receive. I assume that he has cancelled the package and so I can no longer use that username and password.

Thinking all I had to do was Tools/Accounts/Properties and change the internet username and password to the new account I would continue to receive my emails but although it sends it does not receive when I do a test.

I have kept my old email address - should this work? If not, how can I retain all the emails and addresses I have kept over the years (10) and set up the new account?

If your old account has been cancelled, then you won't be able to use your old email accounts.

First of all, export the emails you want to keep to suitable files (in case of accidents).

    In Outlook, click Files....Import &Export...
Click on "Export to a File"
    Click Next
    Select "Comma Separated Values (Windows)"
    Click Next
Click on the folder you want to export
Type in a filename to hold the export
    Click Next
    Click Finish.

Repeat for any other folders you want to keep.

You then need to alter your settings in your Email Account to your new account. If you had more than one email account before and want to have these again, you will need to set these up on your new Virgin account. If you used to be with NTL, this won't work via the Virgin website (unless they've fixed the error), and you'll need to phone Virgin Customer Services and ask them to create the other accounts for you. They will refund the phone costs.

You will then need to set up email accounts in Outlook for each of these.

If Outlook has deleted your old emails through any of this, you can then import the files you exported earlier.

However, if your new email account settings can send mail, it should also be able to receive them. Check your POP3 settings.

(This is Outlook Express - can't find one for Outlook, but the settings will be the same).

If you are using Outlook rather than Outlook Express, you won't risk loosing any e-mails when added, amending or delete accounts (Tools Menu > E-mail Accounts) - so there is no worry there.

You'll only be able to send and receive e-mails using your current active ISP account.
