I get all my calls via Sky, and I have BT line only which I pay £10.50 a month (the unlimited weekend plan for that amount).

However, on my latest bill for the quarter are "one off charges" of £7.01. These are for:
Charge for BT Caller display - £4.46
BT Together Option 1 - Charges for BT Answer 1571 - £2.55

Now, after checking out my calling features, I get BT Privacy at Home for free, which I thought (always did) get caller display free with that and I also get BT Answer 1571 for free, so I cannot understand why I have been charged.

Can someone explain why I have been charged, how I can prevent being charged ever again and do sky do Line Rental as well???

I think I have answered my own question!! I do not make any chargeable calls via BT, so I think this is why they are charging me and I am on the basic plan, not the 12mth renewable contract one.

Also, just checked out Sky and I can do line rental via them for less money so off I trot....

Yes, you need to make 2 chargeable or inclusive calls per month via BT to keep the Caller Display and the awful 1571 service at no charge.

Yes, Sky offer line rental for 50p cheaper, however as you no longer have line rental with BT you are then forced to use Sky for all calls - even the calls that Sky rip you off on and can get cheaper on BT!

It's considered unwise to move line rental away from BT.

What, save 50p/month on the line rental but pay Sky's rip-off prices for 0845 and 0870 calls?
Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.

I use Sky for all calls anyway - I have the unlimited one and pay £6 a month max (Dad and Grandparents live in Spain so this saves me a fortune!) And they have my broadband and TV, so I am kind of throwing all my eggs into one basket! But on the plus side I have never had a problem with Sky! (Unlike TalkTalk a few years ago....)

I wont ring 0845 or 0870's anyway. Its "sayno" for me or I won't ring. My high horse isn't that high, but for rip off phone numbers it is!

...but calls outside the inclusive ones such as calls to 0845, 0870 etc are a rip-off on Sky and why you should keep line rental with BT so you can place those calls back over BT - prefix call with 1280. Not all alternatives are shown on SayNoTo0870.

The unwise thing to do is to move line rental away from BT!

Just remember, if you ever get into financial problems and have to get rid of Sky, you'll then lose Sky line rental and then have to pay to get BT line back - I certainly wouldn't want to place myself into a screwed up situation all for saving 50p - NO WAY!

Take it you also refuse to call Mobiles too?

On the landline? Yes I refuse to do that as well. My mobile has enough all inclusive calls per month anyway and I use that. Also the entire family are on Vodafone and its much, much cheaper for OH to pay for friends and family each month than we do calling each other too.

1280 prefix. Calls have to be answered to become chargeable.
