Is it worth buying Office 2007

Options
Hi everyone,

I just bought a laptop and I bought with it office 2007. It was really expensive and I was just wondering, with today's open office and google docs, is it really necessary?
Is anyone else in this situation?
are those internet applications comaptible with word etc. ie will the files open ok in microsoft word?
Can you get office 2007 cheaper than 100 quid?

thanks

Depends how much you spend on it. I've got Office 2007 Ultimate and there's absolutely no comparison to the free software out there. There are some excellent open source (and free) projects such as Open Office but not really anything that quite covers it all or as advanced as the 2007 versions IMHO. But how much extra that's worth is down to the individual. I spent under £40 on mine so I think it's well worth it but I'd never spend £500 odd on it as I'd rather make do with the freeware etc. How much it'll cost you specifically depends on your circumstances (i.e. eligibility for discounts) and where you get it from.

No, it's only available to students with a .ac.uk email address. Although it is the retail version so you're allowed to keep it after you're no longer in "student status", www.theultimatesteal.co.uk

Looks like the offer isn't currently available anyway. Nearest equivalent is http://www.software4students.co.uk/. You can also get a very discounted price for the basic office for £27 ish if you work for the NHS (and possibly the police).

Although the software4students route is allowable even if you have a school child in your household. Although I'm not advocating kidnapping one if there isn't one already. :D

Ahh and of course there you get unpaid labour as well for your projects. Bonus.

To obtain the NHS Office Enterprise 2007 Win32 English Direct DVD you must have a NHS email address to allow an order to be placed.
Currently this software is £18.00 which is the cost of the postage and packing (software comes from Germany)
