Probs with installing updates after reinstalling XP

It seems this is a known problem but I've tried the MS solutions to no avail.
First off the machine (2 yr old desktop) wouldn't even download updates as it was missing the MS Genuine Advantage thingy which tells them it is a legit copy you are running. Got that sorted with a MS fix, then it wouldn't download the updates, fixed that one but now I have 87 updates refusing to install.
Would be pleased with any help
