Oystercards are the London Transport alternative to paper tickets/ You get a plastic card like a credit card and either load prepay money (say £10) or a travelcard. If you are only buying it for prepay you will need to pay a refundable £3 deposit. If you use it as prepay they've introduced 'capping' so if you use it several times in a day you should only pay as much as the equivalent day travelcard. be careful though as prepay Oystercards cannot be used on trains (as opposed to tubes) so if you want to use a train as well you may be better off with a paper travelcard ticket.
Mayor Ken is very keen on Oystercard and as such he has made prepay tickets cheaper than paper equivalents so it's often cheaper to use Oyster than to buy a separate ticket for your journey.
