Came across this & thought it worth sharing..... we are certainly applying.
The site says 'As a Veteran of the British Armed Forces (defined by the Government as any person of any age who has served in the Regular or Reserve Forces) you may at times have wished for your old Identity Card. Research has indicated that many Ex-Servicemen and Women aspire to having their former service recognised and would welcome the opportunity to carry a form of identification. Additionally, proof of former service can unlock existing discounts on certain services and products both within the United Kingdom and abroad.'

Interesting, you need to pay to prove you are a "Veteran" on an annual basis...not for me
Typical for the British serviceman/woman being shafted compared to his peers in other lands, nothing new there I guess...
I have my old ID card with RES stamped on it anyway0 -
sorry its not for you - it might be useful for some, as i guess that it has the potential to save quite a bit
dont' think it deserved a thumbs down though really - i was just sharing information that i'd found2010 - nothing as we emigrated to Australia!!! :j0 -

Hi Polly,
I hope I didn;t come across negatively against your post...it wasn't the intention
I'm all for lads and lassies who serve their respective countries getting a bit of appreciation shown for what is generally a thankless task outside of their circle of family and friends.
Granted, I never "signed up" for discounted rates on various goods and services but it does make you wonder when you see how the folks in the US and Canada etc treat their servicemen and women compared to the UK...
I'm sure some people will find your post very helpful - it's just a bit of a personal "beef" on my part :rolleyes:0 -
Hi,
Mainly for the attention of any War Pensioners on here who receive a War Pension or have received a War Pension Gratuity, the Service Personnel & Veterans Agency (SPVA) now issue, free of charge, an 'identity card' identifying that the holder is a War Disablement Pensioner.
The card is plastic and 'credit card' sized and has the holders details on it as well as the SPVA logo and address etc.
To obtain the free 'id' card, just ring the SPVA at Norcross on 0800 169 2277 and ask for the card. After answering a few questions over the phone to confirm your status as a War Pensioner, the card will be sent to you within a couple of weeks.
I have had mine for about three months now and apart from anything else it is very handy for proving entitlement to things such as veterans offers etc.

Has anyone got an idea of how long it takes to process applications?0

The Royal Air Forces Association do a card like this for a one off fee. These are for ex-national service, regular, and R.A.F.V.R.(T.) retired. You do have to be a member of R.A.F.A. to buy it though. The other services or regimental associations may have a similar scheme.
