Knocking on front wheel when turning left?
Hi,
Firstly, i have no understanding of cars at all, infact i find it all quite scary! So please help :0)
When i turn left the front of the car starts knocking at a particular angle - going around roundabouts etc..
knock knock knock knock knock.... really fast!
I have two questions -
Is this dangerous?
Can it be fixed?
Thanks- advice really appreciated!

It's most likely to be the cv joint at the front left wheel (correction, u need to establish whether the knock comes from the left or right front wheel). It can be dangerous as it can seize the wheel if the part failed completely, but dont worry too much if this only recently happen. Best to get it change as soon as u can.
Find the part on here: http://www.gsfcarparts.com/ or others can advise.
I had a nissan micra which I bought the cv joint for about £40 a couple of yrs ago and paid the local mechanic £30 to change.0 -
Or it might be a wheel bearing. Grab wheel aat 3 and 9 o'clock and see if there is any movement when pushing and pulling in opposite directions. But you would probably nostice a slight rumble at other times. So CV is probably favourite.
Agree with Arsenal get is booked in as soon as possible but if it has just started you will probably be ok for a day or so, but don't plan any cross country treks.0 -
as others have said it will be a c.v joint, this connect the wheels to the gearbox, you may find if you take it to a garage they will diagnose it as needing a new drive shaft, depending on the price its probably worth changing the full drive shaft.
if the c.v joint breaks then you will not be able to drive the car so get it looked at pretty soon.
my vans c.v joints went and from first hearing the noise to getting them replaced i got 600 miles....work permit granted!0 -
thank you sooooo much! i just got my hands black, and i don't think there is any movement, so it looks like it could be the cv joint.
I'll take it to a mechanic now! i thought it was a write off!
thanks!0 -
hi goldspanners we cross posted!
are drive shafts expensive (it sounds it?)0 -
It depends on the car but for mine I can get a shaft for £60 or buy it second hand f0

Again depending on the car it should be cheap to fit it, less than an hour on my own car0 -
oh ok so not too bad - thanks again for this advice! it really is a no go area for me0

anything from £54 to £90 so not too expensive for parts and an hour or so should change the part....work permit granted!0
