Mastercard Credit Card with Cashback and/or Discount offers

Hi all,

I pay off my balances in full (never paid a penny of interest in all the time I have had a credit card and never planning on it). I currently have three credit cards (Egg Visa, Nationwide and Natwest) for different reasons:

* Egg - 0% offer when I first got it back in 2005 but now has a £5000 credit limit and have offers/discounts through it's rewards section of its site.
* Nationwide - for use abroad (£2550 limit)
* Natwest - Student Credit Card I got in 2001 when starting university (£2100 limit)

I am happy with Nationwide and Egg but I want my Natwest Credit Card to work better for me, so am considering applying for a new Mastercard credit card (since Mastercard have offers on their website and some things require Mastercard to pay with so am not considering Visa). I'll then cancel my Natwest card as all they could offer me in the retentions dept was a measly 7% APR for 6 months...

I don't spend a huge amount on my credit cards each month (£150/month max probs) so cashback isn't massively important but wouldn't turn it down as I'll probably be going into a very good job in a year or so's time (finish my PhD and work in Oil and Gas). Also, I would like a card like the egg card which offers you discounts and deals. I am not so keen on reward cards though such as rubbish airmiles or nectar.

What cards do people recommend? I have looked at the Cashback card of Capital One and that's probably the most likely at the moment. What's the benefit of a Platinum/Gold card? I believe they offer deals associated with them? All opinions gratefully received.

Thanks! :money:

  • Egg money sounds like a possibility. How easy is it for someone with an Egg Visa card to obtain an Egg Money Card?

I wonder if I then ring up Natwest to cancel, they may offer me a 0% balance transfer for a year. Then I could stooze that money through Egg Money to my savings account (which is tax free)... interesting idea. Thanks!

    Hi,

I can't say what it is like to open an Egg Money card for somebody already with an Egg Visa. But I would say quicker than a complete new applicant.

I opened a Egg Money card for my grandad back in april, it didn't take that long to complete the application - got instant decision. Hes had his first statement through as he didnt start using until beginning of may. He pays in full every month (well will do.)

But he likes it, well once I persuaded him to get into using a credit card for the cashback.

  • I just applied for the Egg Money card...

Accepted straight away. 7.9% interest, £2600 credit limit. Will be ringing up Natwest once the card and pin have arrived and see what they can offer me. Glad to know the credit card will be working for me for once! :)

I guess I will also have to think about the Egg Visa card and whether it's worthwhile keeping that. Having the £5k credit limit on it I do believe would help for future credit card applications but I'll have a think about that in due course. Maybe if I gave them a ring, they would transfer that £5k to my Egg Money card instead... Thanks anyway! :)
