ebay - someone bought my item and decided its "not right"

hi I've only just started selling on ebay and have had no problems so far then today I sold a item and when i've logged into my account I've a message from the buyer saying it's the wrong one and they've decided not to pay for it. I then replied saying i'd already paid fees and in the next 7 days would start a unpaid item dispute which would then be mutually agreed so i'd get my fees back. Is this ok or do you thin the buyer could leave neg feedback in the mean time?

If they reply to the dispute, then they can still leave you negative feedback. It doesn't even have to be a sensible response to the dispute, they could write a load of nonsense like 'my monkey eats banana's' and still be able to leave the neg...
How much were the fee's? Can you not just take the hit to prevent any bad feedback, especially since you haven't been selling long....0 -

You can't run a business like that.
Whats the 'buyers' account like, if its new they'll almost certainly not reply.
The other option would of been to offer a mutual cancellation when filing the dispute. Email them first for warning of this saying 'its nothing bad and they are no negative repercussions blah blah'. Going down the mutual route is less confrontational than a full blown dispute....but having said that this route won't rid the deadwood out of ebay.0 -

If it's a cheepo item tell them to leave good feedback and you'll swallow the fees and relist."Love you Dave Brooker! x"

Explain how this is a 'mutual?'
The only way to stop these buyers is to go for a full NPB, give them a strike and reclaim your fees. I certainly would not be trusting this buyer with a mutual, if they are too stupid to buy the right item are they going to be able to agree that you can have your fees back? No way would I risk that. Even if you do a mutual and they agree or disagree they can leave you feedback.I’m a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on the eBay, Auctions, Car Boot & Jumble Sales, Boost Your Income, Praise, Vents & Warnings, Overseas Holidays & Travel Planning , UK Holidays, Days Out & Entertainments boards. I'd agree. If every seller tip toed around buyers like this then eBay will be even more full of bad buyers than it is. People still think that an eBay purchase is like any other and that changing their mind has no impact on the seller. However, on occassion, if the buyer had first sent me a nicely worked email however which grovelled and apologised for their error and their feedback was good (especially feedback left) then I might explore a mutual with them.
eBay should really look into a new facility for cancelling transactions. The mutual system can be confusing to newbies and can all too easily end up with the dispute being closed by them clicking the wrong button, you losing your fees with nothing you can then do about it. Ideally they would start a seperate facility to 'cancel' a sale. The buyer would still need to agree to it and if they didnt then it should still leave the non paying bidder process as an option to you. If they did agree then the transaction should be completely cancelled, all fees should be refunded and the buyer blocked from leaving feedback for it as effectively the transaction never happened......now I must stop being sensible.0 -

But at the same time you will also struggle to get off the ground running a business if your feedback is poor after a few months of trading...0 -

A mutual though still doesn't prevent a neg being given and in fact a couple of weeks ago there was a thread on here (or was it on the ebay forum?) with a link to a buyers feedback where they had left neutrals and where the sellers had responded suggesting that this was after a mutual had been agreed.
At least if you go for a full NPB there is a good chance the buyer won't be around long and once they are suspended any feedback left will be removed.I’m a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on the eBay, Auctions, Car Boot & Jumble Sales, Boost Your Income, Praise, Vents & Warnings, Overseas Holidays & Travel Planning , UK Holidays, Days Out & Entertainments boards. I think the OP means that buyer bought item and then declined to pay for it.I’m a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on the eBay, Auctions, Car Boot & Jumble Sales, Boost Your Income, Praise, Vents & Warnings, Overseas Holidays & Travel Planning , UK Holidays, Days Out & Entertainments boards. Has the buyer offered to cover your fees? In the past I have had a buyer that has paid my fees because they had made an error. Perhaps could leave feedback that the buyer did not complete the transaction but paid the fees. If this is just a one it shows that the buyer is willing to cover mistakes and both of you are shown to be reasonable.
If they made a habit of not completing transactions as a seller I would want to know.0
