Help with phone extension wiring needed

I'm trying to add another telephone extension in my house and I thought it would be straight forward until I opened the existing socket and found all the wires were a different colour to what I thought they would be. The extension in Bed1 is hard wired from the master and I wanted to wire a a new additional cable into Bed2 from there. To be able to get rid of all the dangly microfilters, I have bought sockets with the telephone and rj11 jack built in. I also bought the 4 core cable to wire this.

Upon opening the extension box, I found that the existing colours and connections were:

1 - Red
2 - Yellow
3 - Blue
4 - Black
5 - Green
6 - White

The new socket has 3 screw terminals - A,G & B and 3 IDC terminals 2,3 &5

I think that the new cable will go 2=Blue/White, 3=Orange/White, 5=White/Blue but I have no idea what to do with the old wires.

If anyone could tell me how I connect this all up (and indeed if I have bought the correct bits), I would be eternally grateful!

Sorry for the long rambly post, I hope it all makes sense :)

It is difficult for anyone to know what the other wires are doing and it is probably worth trying to trace them back to another socket. Someone could be using these as a junction for wires to another socket.

Go back to the master and see what's happening there.

Internal phone wiring only needs three wires (and that's if you use the bell wire).

The common reason for using an ADSL faceplate is to disconnect the internal wiring from the broadband - thus getting the best signal possible at the master socket. Adding these ADSL sockets around the house will only really offer cosmetic benefits.

    Have a look here:

Start again with the right cable., The colour codes are for burglar alarm cable. If this cable is going to be carrying your broadband, you will be very lucky if you don't have problems

Yes I would rewire them all. Get your self some pretty decent cable, our local poundshop has got proper BT extension kits in. Also make sure you borrow or get a decent punch down tool.

As mentioned above 2 and 5 are the only connections needed.

I already have broadband from the extension without any problems so I was hoping to be able to do this as a quick easy fix.

I've opened the master socket and the wires are the same as the extension with an added blue/white going to 2, and a white/blue going to 5 from the outside cable.

The extension cable is run through the floorboards so I would prefer not to have to renew it yet until I redecorate, so my question would be, can I connect the 2 & 5 colour wires to the new box and leave the rest unattached?

yes, only 2 and 5 are used on modern telephones, the 3rd wire became redundant when we stop having bells in phones
