Just a SUGGESTION for those who want to try it.
I imagine popping it in the oven would have much the same effect.0 -
Bit hard to keep it plugged in if its in the oven though
Either way it worked. Obviously you completely disagree Marty but I got the result i wanted - a fixed xbox without having to send it off and wait for it to be returned (that is of course if they returned the xbox i sent to them and not someone elses). If you read through other xbox red light threads you will see that sending it off does not guarantee you will get an xbox back that will 1) be the one you sent off and 2) be one that doesnt have exactly the same problem again.
May i suggest that we agree to disagree0 -
Though I'm loathe to do it, I'm going to have to quote Wikipedia here (I know, I know):Some customers who have suffered the 3-ring error have found that overheating their system and then allowing it to cool provides a temporary fix, resulting in the Xbox functioning for as little as a few hours, or as long as a couple of weeks. This is achieved by wrapping the console in towels (without the HDD, any game discs, A/V or ethernet - only the AC cord is left connected) and allowing it to "cook" in a warm room for around 20 minutes, followed by an approximate 15-minute cool-down time. It is not advised to perform this technique as it could potentially void the manufacturer's warranty in addition to running the risk of further damaging the system by overheating the memory, CPU, and GPU, and drying out electrolytic capacitors; said capacitors cannot tolerate temperatures greater than 105° Celsius for an extended period of time. [emphasis mine]
From what I can gather, it seems to be a short term solution at best, and a potential Xbox destroying one at worst. I'm glad you're able to use yours again, but I wouldn't go thinking that you won't have to send it off to Microsoft just yet...;)0 -
Personally, unless your xbox is over three years old and now fully out of warranty I don't see the point in trying to do this when you can either take your console back to where you bought it from or return it to Microsoft for repair. It's going to be fairly obvious when the case comes off what has happened as it's going to warp the motherboard and casing in such a way that it would never do under a normal failure.0

Ok so we have been having problems with ours freezing, our xbox is 14 months old so just out of guarantee, we phoned them up and they wanted £60 to fix it!!! we refused and kept turning it on then off when it froze, within an hour we had 3 red lights of death! Phoned Xbox back up and it is being collected tomorrow morning by a courier and should be back with us within 7-14 days fixed free of charge ... I wouldn't recommend any of this wrapping it up in a towel etc etc ... it is only a short fix for the problem. Xbox do say it is free, and they also extend the warranty to 3 years as it is a known fault!
Give Xbox a ring and get it done

Ok, Ok - I give in  .
If or when it happens again I will call microsoft and get them to fix it. I will also be woman enough to admit if it does get the ring of death again. Any bets on how long my 'fix' will last :rotfl: .0 -
Mine has recently done it and it took 2 days for a courier to pick it up form my haouse and me and my mates received it back in 10 days! Which is good to say they say it will take 2-3weeks. It goes to Frankfurt in Germany to be fixed, so I say youl recieve it 2weeks max!0

Take it back to the shop were you got it from and if they don't replace it there and then you are entitled to a refund.
don't let them fob you off with having to wait and send it away to microsoft etc.
if they don't budge then just get a refund and buy another from another shop.
mine got the rrod a few weeks ago after 7 months so took it back to argos and after a bit of haggling with the manager got a full refund then went and got a new one from comet.0 -
It's generally the cooling, make sure the xbox has ample ventilation.0
