Convert single glazed wooden windows

Options
Hi everyone,
I'm a first time poster on this board, and wondered if anyone can help me please?
I recently moved into a house with wooden framed windows. Most are double glazed, but some are single glazed.

Is it possible to just replace the glass in the single glazed ones with double glazing? ie: keep the frames, which are fine, and just replace the glass.

If so, would I be able to buy and install the glass myself or would someone need to do the work for me?

Thanks

check and see (via your local council) if your house is in a conservation area or is a listed building as you may be able to get a grant to replace / refurbish your existing windows. Visit here and type in 'windows' in the search box (the link is about a mile long so didn't want to put it here)

this site gives some great advice on looking after older properties......
  • yes double glazed units can be fitted you may need special units if your frames havent got a wide glass rebate they are called stepped units
if you think peoples advice is helpfull please take the time to clicking the thank you button it gives great satisfaction
  • Or alternatively, you could have the rebates deepened,a job i have tackled before.Stepped units are the easier option but not quite as aesthetic.

We had hard wood new frames and double glazing ages ago but over time the glass seal failed. The local glass company does do double glazed replacements to size and they are not expensive but the gap between the pieces of glass is not very wide. On one window I did notice that the frame does not quite cover the silver thingy in the glass so this is something to make sure will be OK.

Must say that I much prefer hardwood frames but they are very expensive now. They have been treated with Sickens a couple of times and always look good. We have one new window where the frame is plastic, brown on the outside and white inside and Idon't think they look as good..
