Barclays shares

Hello.
Having done a search, but so far all the threads I looked at don't relate to my question so here it is.
I have 208 Barclays shares, given to me when Barclays bought the Woolwich as I had a Woolwich savings account. Now I have received an offer from Barclays of a further 44 shares I can buy for £124.
Now, I can easily afford £124, but at the same time I don't want to waste it. Anyone can tell whether it would be a good idea to buy these extra shares, or should I just forget it?
Thanks.

Be careful who you open up to. Today it's ears, tomorrow it's mouth.

IMHO, forget it. Invest it in something with growth prospects.Krusty & Phil Madoff, 1990 - 2007:

Thanks.:). In fact, Barclays shares value has decreased enormously in the last year or so. As I said it was a little windfall, which is why I kept the shares, but using my own money is another matter.
I shall shred the stuff they sent me and keep my money in my ISA then.Be careful who you open up to. Today it's ears, tomorrow it's mouth.0 -
given how far Barclays shares have fallen, this might be a good time to buy them. and given you say you can easily afford it, i'd take up the offer if i were you. in fact, unless you actually believe that one of the major UK banks is going to go bust, I'd say the whole UK banking sector is pretty attractively priced. that's one reason why i'm progressively buying RBS shares right now.0

Depends a lot on whether you believe there is value in Barclays at the current price. I am neither an investor, nor a financial analyst so I can't offer you any meaningful opinion on that.
Unless you believe it is the end of the world, then there will be value in selected financial institutions.
Where there is rampant fear in any market or indeed sector, those who lack the knowledge and understanding will often throw out everything. Of course there will be others of that group who buy up what should be thrown out as well.
As far as Barclays is concerned, the investment bank arm, Barclays Capital, is struggling with revenue problems and structured credit exposures, whereas the main retail and commercial bank is dominated by UK, South Africa and Spain, all geographies experiencing problems. I suspect there is greater downside risk than upside reward at this point.Hope for the best.....Plan for the worst!

Well for a change I was here first... :T
Dunno. As I said £124 is not a lot for me as I have no debts but good savings. I will read this thread again and decide over the weekend (gee that's only tomorrow now), as the deadline is on 17th July anyway.Be careful who you open up to. Today it's ears, tomorrow it's mouth.0 -

You don't normally find me talking about money. :rotfl:
If I decide to buy I'm looking at long term and I know the price is low at present but even if they go lower I'm not looking to make quick money so I'm not really worried.
I automatically reinvest my dividend each April and October so this is really not much different for me.
I'll let you know what I eventually decide.£2 Coins Savings Club 2012 is £4.............................NCFC member No: 00005.........

Bump!!!
Any other opinions or ideas?
I hold Barclay Shares and have been invited to buy more.
Barclay's are releasing more shares into the market and as a current share holder I've been offered a set number of shares at a reduced price.
I'm seriously considering it but I'm interested in your views.£2 Coins Savings Club 2012 is £4.............................NCFC member No: 00005.........

Do you mean £124 per share or for the whole 44 shares? Also, how long do you have to hold them before you're able to sell again (is there some kind of resrtiction since they're given to you?) If not, buy them then sell them immediately.
At the time of writing, BARC shares are priced at 298.00, so 44*298-44*128 = 7480 in the bag! (of course I'm not inclduing dealing charges etc...)
If you're used to dealing with shares then it's at very good value to keep in your portfolio.... It'll being the average purchase price of your other BARC shares down as well....
I don't think (well... hoping not) that another UK bank will go bust... a economically strong countries requires strong banks.... so (hopefully), the gov and BoE won't let anything bad happen.... otherwise we're in for a looooong and terrifying recession....0 -
