Downloading http or ftp

Been to a website that offers http or ftp downloads,just wondering what is the difference. thanks.

HTTP is the protocol that allows browsing generally (Hyper Text Transfer Protocol)
FTP was originally created as a protocol simply to transfer files (File Transfer Protocol)
You may find FTP downloads reach higher speeds than HTTP equivalent - not 100% sure why that is but guesses include:
FTP based downloads might be served from a different location
FTP download doesn't include extra data that HTTP might
Less people choose the FTP option and so there is more bandwidth available for it
(hopefully one of the smart folks will provide the correct answer to that bit)
