bad sky signal

Options
ive had sky tv for 8 years, 4 at my current address.Recently ive had problems with the signal cutting in and out, its definatly to do with bad weather. i rang sky and they sent out an engineer who said it was because of trees across the road from me and that the dish needed lifting up on a pole. i accept that trees can be a problem but they didnt suddenly grow over night and block the signal. The trees are about 40 meters away and arnt that much higher than my dish, my neighbour doesnt have a problem, hes on sky and his dish points the same way and the same height (maybe even slightly lower). So i rang again and the engineer was supposed to come on wednesday but didnt turn up. tried ringing yesterday to find out what happened, i gave up after being on hold for 20mins. So i finaly got through today and the girl i spoke to said there was a note on the system saying the engineer had already advised me it was the trees, so it was the same engineer sent the job and he didnt even bother coming back, how does he know if the dish is ok if hes not even gone up a ladder to it?
so im thinking of cancelling and getting freesat, anyone tell me if its ok

If you dish is out of alignment, you have problems with trees (more prevalent in the summer with more foliage), or your LNB is duff, then freesat won't work either as you would use the same dish.
Best to get back to Sky and give them a rocket, did they charge you for the visit?

PS, the angle that the Sky signal hits your dish is between 20 and 30 degrees, if you have a protractor you could check the line of site from your dish.

i threatened to cancel and they said theyd fit a new dish and coax.
at the risk of sounding thick, when you say the signal comes in at 20 to 30 degrees, is that asuming 0 degrees is verticle?

Have you got a panasonic box?

Ours did the same, and we found that by changing the output from RGB to PAL, it solved the problem.

Failing that, you can buy your own dish and cable off of Ebay and fit it yourself. A meter costs a few quid, and it's relatively easy to do.

BTW - 0 degree is ground and 90 degrees is directly overhead.
