Credit Card Advice

india Posts: 685 Forumite
I would like to get a credit card but I don't know which one to go for.

From September I'll be a student so probably won't pay off all in full every month.

But saying that the credit card would only be used for emergencies or big purchase that I couldn't afford outright.

So a low APR is crucial.

Any advice?

Its probably easiest to get one from your own bank... if you have a student account then try them

why do you want to reduce your income and standard of living by paying interest on your credit card?

for big purchases and things you can't afford outright, learn how to save up the money before you buy... that way you earn some interest rather than pay it and who knows you may find you dont really want the item anyway.

    Don't get a credit card.

If you don't pay it off in full it will cost you, you'll acrue debt - best to not buy things if you can't afford them. Save up the money and then you can decide if it's really worth spending on what you saved it for.

But if you get a 0% APR card you can enjoy the things you want in life "NOW" and improve your cash flow by paying for things in smaller ammounts of money at zero cost to you, so you will have more money left to spend at the end of the week/month.

But you must consider how you will repay in full at the end of the 0% period so don't incur any interest :)

Thanks for explaining that to the OP, it's important they are aware how to use a CC without paying the provider for it!!

  • india, if you are going to be a student then your bank will in all likelyhood be able to provide you with a student credit card which will have a small limit on the card, around £500. My advice, give the card to your mother/father/parent and don't ask for it back until the last term.
NEVER use it for cash. If you use it to pay for say essentials like food shopping make sure you pay it back in full each month. Interest will be taken if you don't. And...have fun at university.

No, don't get one that you don't have a decent, workable and quick plan to pay off in full. Credit cards in and of themselves don't get you into debt, not having a decent plan do pay them off does. I mean, I'm up to about £800 on my HSBC CC, but I have a plan to pay it all off before my 0% deal ends. £800 to some would sound like a huge debt, but it's not a problem as I know what I'm doing.
