Bewley Homes - BEWARE!!!

When I bought my house from Bewley Homes (mainly operate in the South and South East of England) naively I believed their sales patter that the customer service was second to none. This was backed up by their website which mentioned numerous awards they won for good customer service.

Guess what? It was a lie. The awards were given by Zurich who provide the 10 year cover on the new builds. You scratch my back, I scratch yours!

After 2 years and numerous phone calls and letters to them very few of the snagging problems were fixed. In short there is no Customer Service. It wasn't just me who has suffered. EVERYONE else on the development has suffered too. Overflowing toilets, leaking central heating systems, doors that won't shut, doors that won't open, collapsed ceilings, dodgy roofs ..... I could go on. It's been a nightmare. To cap it all they were supposed to have the road resurfaced so that it was in a fit enough state to be adopted. Now we're told they're not going to do it and they're trying to get the residents to take care of it. That's not going to happen.

It's not just this site that has suffered. My new manager also bought a new build from Bewley near Basingstoke. About half of the houses on the development have rats/mice running up and down the cavity walls!!!! Uggghhh. Guess what ... nothing was done!!

Never again. Be warned......avoid these cowboys at all costs!!!!

We had rats in our attic too as that had got in through the a hole in a neighbours wall, not what you want or expect. It was a David Mclean Home. They thought it was squirrels for a while as it is unusual for rats to go so high - we live in a three storey house. The poison makes them really thirsty and leave the property in search of water - so at least we weren't left with dead rats. Just droppings and urine...

The link is working now Fred.

I know 2 people who live in Bewley homes which were build in 2000. They have very minor problems with the homes that are easy to fix. The local council stated the homes were one of the best developments in the borough which is why I can understand them getting the award in 2001.

Therefore I'm guessing that Bewley's standards have dropped significantly as the housing market has boomed and they expanded. I notice on their site they now have lots of special offers which they never had before which could explain why they are refusing to fix things as there may be a cash flow problem.

  • Olly,

It is almost irrelevant which brand the house was constructed under. All the builders use random groups of subcontractors - it is luck of the draw. Always worth speaking to a few of the people who have already moved in before you buy, if you can. The builders rely very heavily on the people on the ground doing a good job and as the industry goes into slow down and these people start losing their jobs quality will get worse. This will affect all builders not just Bewley Homes. Buyer beware
  • FredScuttle, why don't you all get together and those with doors that won't shut swap doors with those that won't open. It's probably just down to the door casing.

Seriously though, buying a house should be an enjoyable experience and unfortunately, as tony897 says, it's luck of the draw on the subcontractors that oftenmakes the difference.
I am a Mortgage Consultant and don't like to be told what I can and can't put in a signature so long as it's legal and truthful.
