hi

does anyone know how much it would cost to change a private reg to a new car, that is on my current car ?

I am selling my own car and putting the reg on my new car, I had a look on the dvla website and it says £80 to change, but I was wondering does my own car go default to the reg that was on it when I first bought it

I wondered if anyone had any first hand experience.

thank in advance.

You will need to apply to retain your current number (I would do it before you put the car up for sale - due to the length of time it may take) - this currently costs £105. See here http://www.direct.gov.uk/en/Motoring/BuyingAndSellingAVehicle/PersonalisedRegAndNumberPlates/DG_4022575.

You then need to pay the £80 assignment fee onto the new vehicle (you have up to 12 months to do this).

If the DVLA are happy with the age of your current vehicle - they will then assign a new plate with appropriate age.
I am currently assigning a personalised number - it's a juggling act with the paperwork!!

  • Webbie....that's actually incorrect.
You fill out a Retention form and pay the £105 (Consists of £25 "holding" fee and £80 towards transferring it onto your new vehicle)

Once the private reg has been retained you'll receive a certificate with your private reg at the top and a blank space where you write the current reg of your new car. Once you have the log book for the new car, you can post or go to the nearest DVLA office and ask them to assign the reg to the new car.

A retention lasts for 12 months. If you haven't assigned the reg to another vehicle within 12 months, it's £25 again to retain it for another 12 months.

The car that currently has the private plate on it, will 9 times out of 10 be assigned the age-related reg it had before you put the private plate on. However, the DVLA will advise you what reg to put onto that vehicle.

    Hope this helps.

As said whatever you do transfer the plate before you sell the car, it can get very messy if you don't. In my case I didnt and the return post went to the new keeper etc etc.

If the old plate was of little value which it probably was, they are likely but not guaranteed to re-issue the original number so saving the old plates would have been a good idea?;)

My daughter did something similar and ended up losing a plate back to the DVLA which had cost her £500. The DVLA were very unhelpfull to say the least:mad:
I like the thanks button, but ,please, an I agree button.

Will the grammar and spelling police respect I do make grammatical errors, and have carp spelling, no need to remind me.;)

Always expect the unexpected:eek:and then you won't be dissapointed
