Yep, D40 is the way to go.
It's what I'd recommend pretty much everyone to get when they express an interest in getting a "proper" camera. Nikon are offering a free 2 year warranty and £30 cashback at the minute on it too.
I'd suggest getting if from Amazon though; it's £25 cheaper than the price you'll pay in Currys or Jessops. Argos want £319 for it which is just laughable. Not that it isn't worth £319, but you can get it so much cheaper elsewhere.0 -
I was close to picking the Panasonic TZ3 (no viewfinder) but am so glad I didn't. I bought the FZ18, in February, and find even though it has a big LCD screen I prefer to use it's viewfinder. In sunlight there is little choice as LCD screens are not easy to use.
Go for DSLR if you have the patience to go through the learning curve but a 'bridge' type of camera if you are more interested in the 'point and shoot'. I was able to borrow an Olympus 410 DSLR for a week and knew in my case it was not for me.A retired senior partner, in own agency, with 40 years experience in property sales & new build. I've just bought a Panasonic Lumix FS5. Brilliant little camera!!
It has Optical Image Stabilisation which is the brilliant. Most digital cameras only have Digital Image Stabilisation which is not as good.
Check out this website for some good reviews:

A DSLR is recommended for the creative possibilities - you can still use them in 'point-and-shoot' mode, as they have 'instant shooting' capabilities, as well as the more creative functions. You have fun by experimenting with their creative settings, and will soon learn how to adjust for amazing pictures. Bridge/compact cameras are great, but the ability to experiment with DSLR's is priceless. Like others, I'd go with D40/50 or similar, to start with - and don't fall into the trap of thinking the more megapixels, the better the quality! It's 4 In The Morning :j0

I would recommend a DSLR too if you want to get into photography as a hobby.
Find a little camera shop (Preferably an independent one, rather than Jessops etc) and see if they have any 2nd hand ones for sale - you should be able to get one 2nd hand for under £300.I don't believe and I never did that two wrongs make a right0 -
hi thanks for that, got the nikon d40 from currys digital, got a carry case and memory card as well, all came to £337
there was no mention of a cashback deal, so where do i find out info for that?
thanks0 -
