Unconfirmed as yet (not due to be announced for a week or so):
Connection fee to be increased from 6p to 7p on all chargeable calls;
Call Mobile tariff will make calls to UK mobiles 7½p/minute at any time;
Charge for pressing '3' to make a call back after a 1471 enquiry to increase from 7½p to 10p;
Charge for pressing '0' to make a call back in response to a 1571 message to increase from 7½p to 10p.
Judging by previous increases, implementation of the above likely to be 1-8-08 or 1-9-08.

Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.

What do BT usually do with existing contract customers. I have Call Mobile on a 12 month contract (free) to March 2009. I only pay 5p minute evening. Will BT increase and if so can I leave 12 mth contract without penalty, or can I stay on the present price till end of contract?

Sssshhhhhhh!!! Its a secret.If saved £2710 and only spent the interest (Based on a return of 5%), you would have enough money to pay your TV Licence every year. Saving you £7452.50 over a period of 55 years, based on you buying a license from the age of 20 until your 75 at a cost of £135.50.0 -
If true, the price you pay will increase and you cannot leave your contract without penalty.Thanks

The offer you have is just merely to provide you mobile saver free, not that you would pay 5p per minute. So you will pay what ever the rate of a mobile call on mobile saver is.If saved £2710 and only spent the interest (Based on a return of 5%), you would have enough money to pay your TV Licence every year. BT have confirmed all the above changes - they will take effect on the 16 September.
The price of 'one off' use of Reminder Calls, 3 way calls and Ringback are all also increasing (60p for 3 way calling, 30p/use for the others) - however, if you subscribe to these Calling Features BT have not announced any changes to the monthly rental prices..
In addition, BT will be offering the existing BT Evening and Weekend calls plus free Mobile Saver (previously Call Mobile) on their 'free' 12 month renewable contracts.

I thought it was supposed to be a competitive market. Yet the big boys just seem to follow each other on pricing.
Eg. Call Connection charges.
Q&A from BT Site.- Why have you increased the call set-up fee?
- The call set-up fee remains extremely competitive, two of of our biggest competitors – Sky and Virgin have had a 7p per call set-up fee for some time now.
- Also, a set-up fee is just one part of overall call pricing and value. Our call pricing remains amongst the most competitive in the industry.
- Avoid paying call set-up fee on UK Landline calls by signing up to one of our inclusive Calling Plans as calls included as part of a Calling Plan (eg UK Evening & Weekend landline calls on the Unlimited Evening & Weekend Plan) do not attract a set-up fee. Only non-inclusive calls which are charged at pence per minute rates attract a call set-up fee.

Yeah, expect others to follow with price increases.It's PAC not PAC Code, it's MAC not MAC Code, it's PIN not PIN Number, it's ATM not ATM Machine, it's LCD not LCD Display, it's DVD not DVD disc... It's no one not noone, It's a lot not alot, It's got not gotten... Panini is the plural of panino - there is no S!!(OK my English isn't great, the sciences, maths & IT are my strong points!)0

My mum is with BT and asked me about this today, she has called Bt to clarify, and both times she has been transferred to an indian call center, and had real difficulty understanding them.
In their terms and conditions it says:
Customers who are billed monthly must make at least two chargeable or inclusive calls with BT in that month (excludes calls made with BT Broadband Talk) or BT will charge £1.00 a month for the standard BT Answer 1571 service. Customers who are billed quarterly must make at least six chargeable or inclusive calls with BT within that quarter. (to avoid paying the new fee for 1471 and 1571 service)
My mum does not know what 'chargable or inclusive calls' are, she seems to think it means using the call return service for 1471 and 1571 at least twice a month, rather than dialing herself to make the call.
I presume it refers to the fact that some customers are on inclusive packages and others are on chargable call tarrifs and it just means you have to make at leat two calls a month, whatever package you have, can anyone clarify this please, as BT have aparently not been able to!
Thank you.0 -

Yes, it's any number you call that would be chargeable or inclusive, but not the likes of Freephone numbers.It's PAC not PAC Code, it's MAC not MAC Code, it's PIN not PIN Number, it's ATM not ATM Machine, it's LCD not LCD Display, it's DVD not DVD disc... Thanks bex for your quick reply!
I'll tell my mum she has nothing to worry about then, as she probably makes at least two calls a day, never mind a month!!
She thought it was some kind of penalty for not using the call return service! (although she does like the 1471 and 1571, if they are free, she never uses the call return service)
Thanks again.0
