Shadow transactions

Firstly, I apologise if someone else has already mentioned this, but I couldn't find it anywhere and I think it will be very useful to know with Christmas coming up and our cards taking a bit of a hammering.
Online organisations (eg PayPal) will process your credit card payment immediately, then, a couple of days later, they'll put the confirmation through - a shadow, if you like - BUT this reads as TWO payments for about 5 days until the 2 are married up and the shadow dropped. It's to make sure you have the money before processing the transaction in the normal course of things a couple of days later.
So, you may think you have enough credit on your card, but find your card refused. It won't be because you don't have the cash, it's just the shadow transaction temporarily taking it up.
Ain't this speedy modern banking wonderful?

Worse when your trying to check out of a hotel abroad and can't do so because the hotel themselves have made the shadow hold earlier in the week to make sure you could pay! madness.....!
