Hi - techies ,I wonder if you could help me on this one
microphone just will not work at all on any software - even standard windows recorder
do you think it could be the soundcard - or lack of it - how could I tell if there is a soundcard installed or not ?
The system is a Dell C521 4 GIG RAM 160 GIG HD vista basic - using bog standard trust microphone headset from Asda
thanks in advance - any help would be very very welcome !!

Stupid question, has it ever worked? It may just be broken seeing as it came from ASDA. I bought a £2.99 mic from Amazon and it lasted a week before dying on me0

Has it ever worked? Have you another microphone you can test on the PC?
Obvious as it sounds, first thing to do would be to double-check it's plugged into the right socket.
If you go to Control Panel / Hardware & Sound / Sound and click the "Recording" tab, what shows up?Stupid question, has it ever worked?0 -
Have you set up your microphone within Skype > Tools > Options > General Settings > Audio Settings, here you can make a free test call to test your settings, HTH, Alan.Every day when I wake up I thank the Lord I'm WELSH. .0

This sounds like a problem I have had before.
Try selecting the second option in the "Recording" drop down menu, clicking Apply or OK and trying Windows Sound recorder. Then go back into the recording thing and select the third option, repeat until you have tried each one.
Then come back and let us know what happenedI don't believe and I never did that two wrongs make a right0 -

Thanks - I set up all 4 options in turn as the default device and having the pink microphone jack plugged into the pc back - but it now says that - " an audio recording device cannot be found" ( when using the basic sound recorder from programs / accesorries )
