Best very short term investment
Due to sale of my parents' house I expect to have £20,000 - 25,000 (after paying off all my debts). The plan is to use this money for a loft conversion, therefore increasing the value of our house. I expect that this cash will sit around for perhaps 3 months before it is actually spent. I was considering premium bonds, but…

Beginning Investing - How?
Hi all! I'm 23 and have some savings behind me. With interests rates being at rock bottom, i'm interested to find out more about investing in stocks, shares, or some form of it. My ISA's are all full, and I have enough saved in a non-isa account to go into next years ISA allowance once that becomes available. In the mean…

Asda Christmas Savings Card
Wasn't really sure where to post, but thought might be useful for anyone that shops at Asda. If you put £144 on an Asda Christmas Savings Card then a £6 bonus will be applied on bonus day. The bonus day this year is next Sunday, the 17th, so load a card (or cards) this week and you effectively get a free £6 for each. Every…

WTBSEs 'Starting From Scratch' Savings Diary.
Welcome to my savings diary :) A little about me. I am 34 (eek!), a single mother of 2 and work as a self employed cleaner. Earlier this year i became debt free and decided to start saving some money. I saved about £200 and then my car failed its MOT in spectacular fashion, so my savings went back down to £0. Now i am on a…

Retirement - how much in cash reserves?
Hi all, I will be 55 in January and am planning semi-retirement via partial drawdown / initially low-paid startup self-employment after being made redundant this July. My pension pot is £500K so I will put it in a managed SIPP, crystallise £68K initially, taking £17K TFC and drawing remaining income from April so I won't…

In ISA or in Savings?
I currently have £5760 in an ISA earning just under 2%. However I know that when this rate ends, the rates for new ISAs which allow balance transfers in are really poor. In your opinion would I be best opening a new ISA which diesnt allow transfers from old, using up next years allowance but getting a higher rate. Or to…

Your experience - worst and best saving institutions
The worst for me is Nationwide B.S - constant complaints to them, from not following their own T&Cs, misinformed branch and internet staff and promising to do things...and they dont. Best is between Saffron B.S & Nottingham B.S. - efficient and pleasant staff who deliver on promises. I wish they had more products!! PS I…

2 isas for 16 year olds ?
Hi, re. isas for 16 year olds. Does anyone definitely know the regulations? Is the loophole described below true and still applicable or has the loophole if it did exist now been closed?? Junior ISA loophole for 16 and 17-year-olds! Category: Savings Date: 14/05/2012 Maybe it's deliberate, maybe it's an oversight, but 16…

Advice required please!
Hi all, My dad has an insurance policy which is due to pay out as he has a terminal illness :-( He has a choice of either 122 monthly payments or a £48,000 lump sum. Could I please ask for opinions of the Jupiter Merlin Portfolio Fund? My mum doesn't want to invest in anything risky. If you were in this position, would you…

Post Office Growth Bonds - tax status once matured
My elderly father has quite a bit invested in Post Office Growth Bonds for which he has tax exempt status. Does this tax exempt status carry over on matured bonds where the money has been transferred into a Post Office Easy Savers account?

The Richest Man in Babylon
I've just read this fantastic short book on personal money management and see that it gets good feedback on the MFW thread. This book should be read by everyone before they get their first pay cheque! Highly recommended, simple, true and well told. Has anyone else read it, and if so, what did it inspire you to do?

Lost personal data - advice
I mislaid a USB/SD card adaptor (as of Thursday) which has personal data (on a job application form) and some bank sort codes and account numbers. I've been monitoring transactions and DDs etc since than. Should I notify the banks concerned tomorrow. Even if it is retrieved it is possible someone may use the data?

List of Bank and Building Society groups
Hello, Some time ago I printed off a list of Banks and Building Societies which were linked and where funds would be added together if a claim within the £85,000 safe threshold was made should a bank go bust. I have lost this list and wondered if someone could tell me where I can find it again on martin's pages. I hope I…

IPO's is it worth targeting these?
I was wondering if it would be worth targeting IPO's? If so does anyone know if there is a dedicated website for these, or is it a case of just keeping a watch out the. If anyone does this I imagine you get some awful ones now and again, but overall does it make sense to target IPO's? EDIT:…

Help with Long-Term investments
Am I doing the right thing? I am currently investing about £200 a month with sharebuilder (with dividend reinvestment) in the following stocks: GSK, HSBC, RDShell, BritAmerican Tobacco and NationalGrid. My idea was that it covered a few sectors and was a long term plan (10 to 20 years). As these are FTSE100 heavyweights do…

Transferring Royal Mail shares
I somehow ended up with a paper share certificate. I want to transfer these shares to my daughter. I would like her to hold them electronicly. I have a Stock Transfer form from Equiniti but I can not be sure how to fill it in. I have 227 shares and there will be no money involved in the transfer. I wonder if anyone here…
