Noobs guide to investing?
I am hoping someone can either provide links - or even write - a noobs guide to investments. There is so much overwhelming information and confusing lingo that it is hard to know where to even start when considering investments. Lets say that all ISAs have been maximised and that Person A has 40k left over to invest. At…

Investec Hi-5
Hi all, Thinking of ditching the above account as the % interest has been poor of late. I was just wondering how many of you have 'ditched' this account for better rates elsewhere? My only thought is that once interest rates rise this is a good product which is no longer available for new customers, but is it worth holding…

Selling shares without certificate
I've got a few hundred pounds worth of shares in a company that I might want to sell - trouble is I can't find a share certificate. I've still got the receipt/instruction to buy paperwork from the brokers when I bought the shares back in 1998, so I know how many I've got. And I still get sent the annual financial reports…

West Brom PreMaturity Bond
I have an e bond with West Brom which matures in May 2011. I have just received an offer of a rollover into a pre maturity bond paying 3% for 1 year. The deadline for replying is the end of February. While it seems a reasonable rate I am wondering why they are doing this so far in advance of maturity. Does anyone have any…

Best saving option for £20k
Hi, I've won and lost some decent money on the stock market in the past but have £20K that i keep as my safety net money. At the moment it's just sat in my current count earning very little. I don't really want to tie it up in ISA's and premium bonds seem to return little unless you get lucky. So really i'm just looking at…

Registered for eSaver (Santander) - now want to cancel. How?
A couple of days ago I registered to open an eSaver (issue 2) account with Santander. I did it without doing thorough research :silenced:, and now want to cancel as I've 'fixed' my ISA with HSBC (they had rendered it inactive as I hadn't used it in so long). The eSaver isn't officially 'open' until I send them my ID etc,…

ISA fund transfered without permission
I have authorisation to manage my mothers ISAs, a few of which are are in FundsNetwork through BestInvest. Yesterday I logged in and found the total valuation had gone from ~40k to ~15k with 2 funds missing in the valuation list. It was too late to phone, so I logged on this morning to see ~25k had been invested in Premier…

I have owned a flat for nearly 3 years now on an interest only mortgage to get on the ladder. I now earn a pretty decent salary so want to start making a dent on the mortgage. Thing is I'd like to save for a new house within two years, i.e. something with a garden. So my question is do I use my normal savings money each…

Hi Not sure if this is the right forum to post to, but hopefully it is, and hopefully you could help. Safe short term savings
In 2-3 weeks I will complete on my house and receive about £450,000 that I will need to use in about three months to buy my new home. I can't afford to have the money at risk. Other than opening multiple bank accounts with different banks with different passports how can I save the money without risk? A return would be…

How do you find out if you can buy shares in a company?
Apologies if this is as a really obtuse question but i am going to ask it anyway. My boss has just asked me about a company, Numenta, and if i knew anything about them etc as he knew i held shares in a few companies. Other than typing the name into iii or my share dealing account, is there a simple way of finding out if…

Where does the money go?
I have a UK bank current account and a feeder account where surplus funds each month are transferred. This can build up into a tidy sum over a year. The interest rate however is crap. So, over the internet, I set up an electronic transfer facility with the account details of a Building Society that pays a relatively good…
