My Guaranteed Equity Savings Bond just matured. Sob.
My Barclays Issue 14 5 yr Guaranteed Equity Savings Bond matured just recently. I invested £5000 in 2004 and the maturity value is just £5014.03. Does this sound right to you? I am very risk averse and I thought part of my investment was linked to the performance of the FTSE100 index and part was on a sort of fixed rate…

Best investment short term for large sum.
I have just sold a property and am looking to buy again. Consequently I have a reasonable sum that I am looking to invest on a short term basis. I am afraid I find all the savings information bewildering and wondered if I gave the following criteria someone might point me in the right direction. 1. It needs to be as safe…

Compound or simple interest?
Sorry if this has been raked over already - I didn't search correctly if so - but; my question is that I notice banks describing their savings accounts without using the words 'compound interest', so are the rates given always assumed to be simple annual tranches of interest, or do they actually compute a compound rate…

Hoodless Brennan.... (and charges)
OK I seem to remember Hoodless Brennan going to TD Waterhouse. However, I am now looking on their site and cannot see anything to do with Annual Charges (or Quaterly, or any charges like that). http://www.hoodlessbrennan.com/products-services/online-trading/ They also say it costs £8 a trade. So it seems a lot cheaper than…

Hi There, I'm looking at using a ceratin amount of my wage a month to buy assets. By assets, I mean the traditional sense, as in monetary structures which will provide me with good returns over a period of time. This would be separate to my savings account (or storage account as i like to call it, as your wealth does not…

Advance-Maturity Option Bonds
Earlier this year I took up an E Bond with the West Bromwich Building Society with a one year fixed rate of 4.3% gross p.a.. I have now been offered to extend this Bond for a longer fixed rate period at the same rate. Any thoughts on whether this is a wise move or to hope there might be better deals around when my Bond…

Withdrawl Penalty - Real Interest Rate
The table relating to the NS&I Bond gives 'Actual interest rates if withdraw after ...' which are fine for non taxpayers. However, interest is paid net (which cannot be reclaimed if a taxpayer) whereas I presume the 'penalty' is deducted gross. I calculate that for a basic rate taxpayer, the actual rate is lower than shown…

B&B eSavings Account Question
The Bradford and Bingley Online Savings Account (Issue 7) has a condition which says: A variable bonus of 1.40% gross/AER is paid for first 12 months from account opening providing you maintain a balance of at least £1,000. I'm a little unclear as how that should be interpreted. Does it mean that the bonus is only payable…

Halifax to NS&I 3.95%
Has anyone who has a Halifax current account recently applied for NS&I's fixed bond at 3.95%? If so, what was the timescsale and what was involved with the application process? Combining funds from two Halifax FRISAs
Two Halifax FRISAs maturing shortly, 4 and 12 Dec, and I've now had the maturity instruction forms. Once the second is 'out' on 12 Dec I want if poss to combine funds from both into one new 2-yr FRISA, which means telling Halifax to effectively allow the first (4 Dec) to 'lapse' into a variable ISA for 8 days and take the…

money as a gift
We were given £50,000 as a gift last year. This money went into our current account but then days later it was used to pay a lump sum off our mortgage. Should we have paid tax on this? How much can you be given before you need to declare it - or is this how it works??
